welp, i can't ever remember an italian side losing by three goals as long as i've been alive. have they ever?

Cam
6/9/2008, 07:54 PM
No idea the last time they gave up 3 in a loss, but they looked like what they are: Old and slow. They had a couple of chances, but they pretty much got worked.

I'm still not sure about RVN's goal. They're justifying that the Italian that was out of bounds was ruled as being active, therefore there's two people between him and the goal. He didn't leave the field deliberately, so I don't think it should've counted. Oh well, such is life.

So far, some very boring games so far. Very disappointing, hope it picks up.

Scott D
6/10/2008, 10:31 AM
in any competition that counted, no they have not. RVN was offsides, but I didn't find it difficult to cheer for the Netherlands, since that ***** Robben wasn't playing. Once he's in the lineup, I'll probably hope for Holland to lose every match they play from that point on.

France was a major disappointment, but Romania isn't chopped liver. It'll be interesting to see how Spain plays today, they have huge expectations.

Im sure the Austrians love having more Romanians in their country, half of the gypsies wont leave after the tournament.

Did you see FIFA's response? What a load of crap that was.

Pretty damn convincing. Gonna have to watch that one tonight.

silverwheels
6/10/2008, 01:48 PM
The rulebook says two different things regarding the RVN goal, so flip a coin. It didn't matter a whole lot anyway. The Netherlands were on form and Italy wasn't. The Dutch were young and fast; the Azzurri were old and slow. **** Italy.

6/10/2008, 02:32 PM

this is gonna get Grapevine to respond, but I'll say it anyway.

RVN's goal being allowed was akin to the player had control of puck, puck was in crease first, player was in crease after puck, goal allowed. FIFA just unspecified a specific rule.

Those predictions were made before the start of the tourney so I have to stick to them. Anything is still possible, but it doesn't look good for Italy.

Scott D
6/11/2008, 03:00 PM
Oh, I think Italy will get through to the next round. It's France that I think is going to duplicate their 2006 World Cup performance and come up blank. Ribery isn't Zidane, and clearly they can't accomplish much without Zidane.

Agreed

I don't think Henry played vs Romania.

You are correct.

How much of a disappointment was Greece? That's what they get for playing not to lose instead of playing to win.

Turkey/Switzerland was a pretty entertaining game. So's the Czech/Portugal game from what I've seen so far.

Since it's official that Scolari's going to be the Chelsea coach, he needs to STFU regarding Renaldo and his future at Man Utd. I'd be telling him to leave too if I knew I was going to have to face him 2-3-4-5 times a year.

Wonder what the excuse will be if Germany doesn't make it out of pool play.

Scott D

I'm thinking Bastian Schweinsteiger has already given them their built in excuse with his straight red card today.

silverwheels
6/12/2008, 04:06 PM
Yeah, that was an idiotic move by him. They'll still beat Austria...probably. I was surprised by their complete non-showing today.

Scott D
6/13/2008, 12:43 PM
Great penalty save by Buffon on a terrible call that led to Romania getting a penalty. Italy is going to have to step up more if they want to win this game, a draw does nothing for them.

Scott D
6/13/2008, 12:53 PM
And it ends in a 1-1 draw. Italy needs to beat France, and hope the Netherlands win out.

silverwheels
6/13/2008, 01:48 PM
I'd like to see my two favorite European teams draw in this match and then win their last games to advance. Screw Italy.

Scott D
6/13/2008, 03:37 PM
might be about time to stick a fork in the French. Netherlands automatically qualify, both Italy and France need the Netherlands to beat Romania with nothing at stake to advance.

Depends on which team wins Italy/France. The first tiebreaker is head to head, the second is goal differential. Right now they're even on both counts.

I'm disappointed in Portugal. Since they'd already clinched their group, maybe losing 0-2 wasn't so bad to the host team and get some support and motivation going into the quarterfinals. I'm hoping anyway.

Of all the teams, I'm thinking Holland and Spain are looking the best.

Scott D
6/15/2008, 05:50 PM
That's the one bad thing about the group stage. When you've got a side that has nothing to lose, so they choose to rest some players for the knockout stage. You can't really fault those teams for doing that considering they're playing more games in a shorter span that usual.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of side Holland puts out against Romania since they've already won their group.

that was a completely different dutch team from the one that dismantled italy and france. not sure what happened but russia looked much quicker and livelier than the dutch.

sad to hear about boulahrouz losing his daughter. i'm sure his mind was elsewhere today, maybe along with the dutch players. i was surprised that russia had more pace than them.

now we're looking at germany/turkey in one semi and russia/ italy-spain winner.

Wow, who would have thought that those Spanish midgets would slay the mighty Italian giants. I mean, is it me, or did Spain look s,m,all against Italy. I have to say that Spain was my pick to win it all, as it is every year. I had the great honor to live in Spain for four glorious years, 1978-1982. The jewel in that crown was being able to be at three World Cup games in Atletico Madrid's stadium. They were only Round 2 games, but to a young American in the middle of futbol's "International Super Bowl," it was awe-inspiring. The best game of the three was a 2-2 tie b/w Austria and Northern Ireland. Although a few years ago, and minus a few gray cells, the thing I remember the most was the absolute fanaticism of the fans. There is nothing to compare to in the U.S., I mean nothing. I've been to HS, college, minor and major league games of all sports and I have never found the same absolute rabidity (is that a word?) seen for soccer!

Spain all the way, Viva Espana!!!!!!

Scott D
6/22/2008, 06:47 PM
well if I remember correctly, spain and portugal were on average the 'smallest' teams there. ironically they were also considered the fastest teams as well. Things falling into place for the Spaniards, but Russia won't be a push over as the Dutch found out, I think turkey's luck has run out after the way they got into the semi finals.

birddog
6/22/2008, 07:42 PM
it's difficult to beat germany but when you're playing without 9 regulars a victory becomes next to impossible.

Cam
6/24/2008, 07:12 PM
Thank goodness Spain knocked off Italy. I respect the fact that they get it done in tournaments, but I don't respect the way the get it done.

Buffon is absolutely amazing. His wife's not so bad either.

I'm going with a German/Russia final. I think the Turks have pulled more than their share of rabbits out of this tournament. Even though Spain beat Russia 4-1 the first game of the tournament, Russia's gotten better with each passing game. Spain has been regressing a little. Not a lot, but enough for the Russians to pull one out.

Both games should be interesting, hopefully.

I don't think the Russian back 4 can handle the Spanish attack: Torres, Villa, Fabregas, Alonso, etc will be too much for them. Yeah it will be a very different game than the 4-1 demolition in round 1, but Spain will still win. Should be an exciting game to watch, both teams like to attack and play with some flair. Spain vs. Germany for all the marbles today, no Villa for Spain and Ballack looks to be fit for the Mannschaft. Everyone likes Spain in this one, but I'm actually going to say that Germany wins. Of course, I would not be surprised at a Spanish triumph, but alot of these German players were a part of that deep run in the 06 WC and a few are left from the 02 final team, so they've got the experience. As an Arsenal fan, I hope Fabregas has an incredible game, I don't see why he hasn't started all tournament.
