I started collecting these cards when I was living in Japan in the early 90's. I've only found one site about them, but the info given wasn't too helpful.

Anyone with more info, please peem me or post here.

Cuz I'm trying, after 16 years, to finish off the collection...and I want to know just what the hell I'm collecting.

They are like Magic the Gathering cards. You collect them, then you are supposed to "battle" them against other people's decks.

They are based off the Gundam series characters, the SD is for "Super Deformed".

SD Gundam originated from a contributed illustration of a junior high school student from Nagoya by the name of Koji Yokoi to the "Model News" magazine that Bandai was issuing in the 1980s. The illustration is of a Gundam but with an unusual proportion where the overall height of the Gundam is equal to 2 of its head. This illustration interested the chief editor and so leading to Koji Yokoi serializing SD Gundam in 4 frame comics in "Model News".

The super deformed design was suitable for capsule toys and so SD Gundam started merchandising with the Gashapon series "SD Gundam World" in 1985. Although at first SD Gundam started out as a parody of the Gundam series by the 1990s SD Gundam spawned many spin-off series, SD Sengokuden (Musha Gundam) which has a Sengoku setting, SD Gundam Gaiden (Knight Gundam) which has a fantasy medieval setting and SD Command Chronicles which has a modern military style to name a few.

With its popularity, SD Gundam merchandise expanded to include manga, trading cards, anime and video games.

No, sorry. I just went to eBay and typed exactly what another poster did. I didn't recognize them... that's why I think they look like Pokemon with armor:D

I got all that Havok. I guess I'm not being specific enough.
What I'm asking is this...what's the background story for each part of the series? What are each character saying on those little Japanese quotes up top? And what the hell are all those symbols?

The symbols more than likely denote to which "side" or group that particular card's character belongs to. The Stuff at the top is probably the name of the card (Japanese like to give **** uber long names like "Dark night of justice glimmering down in the twilight with sword drawn for battle")

You might want to use your contacts in the fly boys and find someone what speaks japanese to find out fer sure. Since the derned things never gained much popularity in the states, there are very few English language sights devoted to them.

I found this, you can try to play match the symbols to get there names (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SD_Gundam_Seiden)

NP likes to call me a nerd to get on my nerves, but I'm not. Cute little fighting critters from Japan are just that to me - cute.

Your best bet for buying this type of stuff is eBay as opposed to Anime conventions I would think, as is the case with other collectibles. Private auctions and garage sales will yield the best prices, but you would be hard pressed to find anything collectible except for stamps and coins at those things. Thus, on eBay you might find someone that is cleaning out their basement after kicking out their video-game-deadbeat-mooching teenager. Thus, they wouldn't know the value that Anime collectors would.

eBay is an awful place for mainstream collecting things. Coins, stamps and such are overpriced and bargains are NEVER to be found. However, for more novelty items like the Daryl Strawberry Mets figure sitting on my desk, oh nostalgia!), it is perfect for getting them on the cheap.

Oh man, SD Gundam trading cards. If you want to know backstory on the whole Gundam series, there's tons of stuff out there. Specifically for SD Gundam here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knight_Gundam). Though that doesn't really tell you much.

It's a spin-off series, kind of like if Law and Order had a kids version that was goofy.

And baj, nobody who quotes Episode II is NOT a nerd.

Yah...I've been managing to complete sets here and there...but these things are so goddamned expensive to get from Japan and Hong Kong. I just paid $180 for the prism cards for three sets (20 cards total)

Wow, that's borderline otaku. :D I wish you luck in your endeavor. You should check out some of the different Gundam anime sometime. Good stuff!

I found the mother of all pages for at least finding out what the damned Japanese on these cards say:
