I got to see acoustic guitarist Tommy Emmanuel in Louisville last night. He's an Australian who lives in Nashville, TN. In music circles he is considered the best acoustic guitarist in the world. I discovered he's out of this world talented, with a "wow" factor for all first-timers at the show. I've never seen such speed and technique with a guitar, along with such natural showmanship. I've also never seen such an eclectic fan base - bluegrass fans, blues fans, old ladies, young rock fans, country folk, city folk, etc.

Emmanuel is awesome. You can tell he's having a blast on stage as well, it really adds to the live experience.

While we're on amazing Acoustic playing, check these out:

Erik Mongrain - Air Tap (http://youtube.com/watch?v=AbndgwfG22k)

Andy McKee - Drifting (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ddn4MGaS3N4)

Dayyum, he's smokin!

Lex, are you by any chance in Lexington? If so, you may be the nearest SO regular to me.

Yup. I am in Lexington, Kentucky. Been here for 14 years. Native Okie, though.

Yep, I've seen him a couple times here in the last few years, and he's just getting better with age. Absolutely phenomenal, and the youtube videos don't compare to being there live.

I concur - there is no comparison to seeing him live. It was my first Tommy Emmanuel concert and I was blown away by his talent. There are many talented musicians you might go see and then come away saying he or she is really good, very entertaining. But Tommy goes beyond that. There is a definite "wow" reaction from all of us first-timers. A friend who went with us plays the guitar and sings and has done some paid gigs, and she kept looking at me and saying "Geezuz!" when he played. She was in awe. They say he is an icon in Australia and a star in Europe, but for some reason he has not yet become a celebrity musician in the US. All it would take is one appearance on a national tv show and I think he would become a huge star in this country.
