Since it's the "off season" and the football board is slow, I thought I'd make a poll to see who fans thought was the greatest OU Head Football Coach of all time. There is no wrong or right answer and they were all great in there own right. I'm a bit on the young side, so if I left anyone off for the "old timers," please forgive and right them in.

Who knows, we might even get a good, civil discussion going.

Blake. End of discussion.

Wilkinson built this thing and had 3 championship's and should have had a couple of more. "The streak" ends the discussion. You could say that Bob has it harder in this era then any other coach with scholly limits and recruiting limits, etc..

Aren't we happy to have room for such a debate? Most schools can't.

Are we talking about the coach of the greatest teams?

The best coach (as in training and motivating players)?

The coach who most made Oklahoma Football into an identifiable thing?

The one who had the longest legacy?

I think arguments could be made for all of them.

Bud built the foundation, but Barry gave the head coach position a style that no one could ever recreate. (Good and Bad)

Lets do this poll in another 10 years and Bob will have a huge lead with 5 national titles and at least 190 wins.

Four good choices, strong arguments could be made for all.

Can I say that I'm a bit surprised that after 26 votes have been cast that Stoops has nary a vote?

edit...my vote went to Bud, though I could see voting for Switzer as well.

Me too. I though some of the really young guys on the board would have gave more votes to Stoops.

I guess he needs to win a few more crystal balls before he's in Bud's or Barry's league?

I think when Bob ends his career at OU, whether it be moving on or retirement, he will be in the conversation with Bud & Barry. He's great and I'm glad we've got him but his shoes still don't fill theirs.

As much as I loved Bud during my teens --- I have to Believe Barry took it up one more Notch....

Bennie Owen created the foundation of the football giant....
Bud Wilkinson put Oklahoma on the map.....
Barry Switzer made Oklahoma a monstrous household name....
Bob Stoops resurrected a sleeping giant and continues to take names!!!

Bud Wilkinson is my choice because of the 47 game winning streak that will never be touched and consistency he portrayed during his time at OU. All 4 coaches had this but Wilkinson pretty much started it in the modern era and made it all possible for what we have today.

Bennie Owens is very underrated in OU football history IMHO, and I almost woted for him but never saw his teams play.

So, I was leaning towards Switzer, and went to Soonerstats to make sure I was making an informed decision. I know I should've realized this, and I'm sure I've seen it before -- but from a statistical standpoint, the Big Three are awfully close.

That being the case, I had no choice but to vote for Bud. His winning percentage is almost the same as Bob & Barry -- but homeboy had The Streak.

Once Stoops wins his other two crystal trophies, it's quite possible he'll surpass Bud & Barry. He's got some great stats, especially coaching in the much-maligned age of parity.

Agreed, winning the whole enchilada is what's it's all about, and Bob still needs to do some more cookin.

Easy question, easy answer--Bud Wilkinson. Multiple NC's and a winning streak record that will likely never be broken.

I wonder if anyone on the board actually saw a Bennie Owens team play?

The answer to all of those questions is
BUD

Greatest?

Well, when it came to the hardnosed, anything goes type of play, Bud Wilkinson.

When it came to Pound the oppositions defense into submission with a healthy dose of wishbone, Barry Switzer would be.

When it comes to the modern day (present day) style of football, with complex offenses and even more complex defenses, Bob Stoops would be.

But to answer the question.

I believe Bud Wilkinson (at this time) is the greatest of the greats when it comes to OU football. It is hard to overlook what should have been a record setting National Championship run. I mean Bud Wilkinson should have won the NC in 1949 (11-0), 1954 (10-0), 1957 (10-1), 1958 (10-1). He did win it in 1950, 1955, and 1956 like we are all aware off.

And Bennie Owen poured the foundation.

This is true, but the greatest coaches won more games and national titles.

Bennie Owen in my mind was a great coach, but Bud, Barry, and Bob are better. JMO.
