LOS ANGELES - James Garner's publicist says the Oklahoma native has been hospitalized in Los Angeles after suffering a minor stroke at his home last week.

Publicist Jennifer Allen said Tuesday the star of "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files" was hospitalized Friday. Allen says Garner is doing well and will be going home soon.

Garner, who turned 80 last month, rose to prominence in the 1950s as "Maverick," a wry riverboat gambler who, unlike his TV contemporaries, would often run rather than fight.

He's better known to younger audiences for playing Katey Sagal's father in the sitcom "8 Simple Rules ... For Dating My Teenage Daughter."

Hope he is ok

I had a "minor stroke" a bit over 5 years ago. Trust me. They are only minor when they happen to someone else. Some scary stuff. God Bless James Garner, a Norman kid who made it in the big city.

He was the Speaker at my Brother's Graduation in 1995.

That was one of the worst sunburn I've ever gotten while attending an event at Memorial Stadium.

They could have sold lots of sunblock that day if they had been prepared for how hot it was.

Get Well Soon Maverick!

He is all grace and class as an actor and a Sooner. As somebody has already said, James Garner is and always has been a great ambassador for Oklahoma.
In a close call with Maverick, I think I like him best as Jim Rockford, but he is always good to see.
Best wishes, Jim!

James Garner has always been a class act and a terrific Oklahoman.

I remember back in third grade he came to visit McKinley Elementary School because his uncle was the principal there at the time. He came in to each class room and got mugged by our class. I distinctly remember when he patted my good friend Leslie on his head and the kid proclaimed he would never again wash his hair.

Not long after that he revisited Norman for the Christmas parade and I got the chance to meet him again.

My prayers will be with him, I hope I get lucky enough to meet him once again before he goes with God.
