My son has to make a working model of a human body system. With trepidation and hope, I am asking for some advice. Here are the guidelines:

Do ONLY ONE system. You won't get any credit for more than one.

* The 'body' gets points because it shows me you know where the system is in the body and the approximate size of it. Make sure those 2 things are shown in your model. The 'body' can be a 1/2 body made of cardboard if you like.

* Don't use too much tubing, it is hard to get things thru alot of tubing using only 1 pump (as the heart), or peristalisis (as in digestion).

* Your hand can be the nerve to make things happen. Like you can pump the heart, or turn on a switch on an aquarium pump to start the circulatory system. Or your hand can pull up a tendon to make a muscle contract in the skeletal/muscular system

* Any part left out or the function not said when you present will not get points for the part. You must know them by heart, no cards or papers with you.

* Notice that if it is not a working system, the most number of points you can get is 85 (75 for the urinary system).

* It must work like the body works to get the working points. Example, you can't just pull up an arm and say it moves. Something like a rubber band must be shortened to make it work.

* Bones and joints in the skeletal system must all be different. Example, you can't use 2 hands and say you have 10 phlanges and 10 metacarpals. All the bones must be different. You must know the name and function of each one.

The system can be a working or non-working model. It must not be labeled ( I want to know that you KNOW the parts, not just able to read them).

I think my boy may be screwed.

You cannot use a pre-fab (store bought) model for the system, but you may use pieces of one in yours.

Wow. So you can do just one organ? Two plastic bags for lungs, filled with little bubbles from bubble wrap to be the alveoli. The alveoli can be popped (deflated) or unpopped (inflated) and a series of tubes (lol, internet) can inflate and deflate the lung bags to illustrate the function. I know that's not exactly how the lung works, but it's a start. I guess you could hook up tiny tubes to the bubbles and inflate them that way, but that would be a pain in the rear.

Use both a working model and a non-working model.

Well..here's is what the lung model needs to have...

diaphragm (10 points)
nose and pharynx (10 points)
trachea with rings (10 points)
bronchi (10 points)
bronchioles (10 points)
10 alveoli (1 point each)
nerves to diaphragm (5 points)
model works as body (35)

I like the bubble wrap idea for the alveoli..that part really had me stumped. There are models using straws and plastic bottles that I'm finding might be easy.

How do you activate the diaphragm? Hmm... What an annoying project. Can you slide a tab or something, like in a pop-up book?

well, the directions said that you can use your hand for the nerve switch...so he can manipulate the diaphragm with his hand.

Will you ask her if she can make it to his school next week for the demonstation?

Ba-da-bing!

This sounds like a "whose parent is the bestest builder" project. My daughter is in 7th grade and she had to do a system, but just on a peice of cardbord with print out pictures from the innerwebs.

* Don't use too much tubing,

Well, that rules out making an anatomically correct model of yours truly.

I'm changing my mind on hanging out with you in Seattle.

No offense. ;)
