internet tracking gnomes are pretty good. what they are, essentially, are little gnome like creatures that specialize in hiding at peoples' desks. when one of your employees fire up their favorite web browser, a small electro shock will be administered to the gnomes, thus putting them into high gear. they will secretly watch the person and take notes of every page they go to and for how long. and don't worry, these gnomes have excellent short hand capabilities as to be able to record everything your employee does in a timely fashion.

OK what about a cure for a fat *** secretary that spends her entire day on Myspace and comes up with a 100 excuses why she didn't have time to pay a few bills. Not wanting to get rid of her, just want some proof when I go to her with evidence. Guess there are a few guilty consciences on this board.

You don't need proof. Just tell her to do her job or you'll find someone who can. Quite simple, really. IMO.

Look, Oklahoma is an at-will employment state. You can fire folks for anything or nothing. But if it makes you feel better, write a memo that personal innerweb usage is not permitted except during the lunch hour and/or before the start of the business day and violation is a terminable offense. Address it to all your employees. That oughtta get her attention.

You also might wanna consider installing blocking software that prevents access to certain URL's from company machines.

Nooo! Restricting internet would just kill my reading up on the important things in life like football and SF. I'm pretty sure my bosses wouldn't understand that.

I'd tell her to get her work done and at a satisfactory level and then she can chat with your boyfriends over at My Space, or whatever, as much as she wants.

If the internet is her crack, she needs the carrot.

When I first started, soonerfans was on GE's block list. Not sure why. Now it's not. However, facebook, digg, youtube, and anything with seks in the word are blocked.

But I would really like to know how much time my contractor spends on the web. He's got RSS feeds popping up like every 30 seconds. gaaah

Depends on your budget. For a small office like that I'd suggest Wensense Express but if you want to do it cheap (or free) you could install a proxy server on a p.c. with 2 network cards and point all your browsers to it for internet access. Log everything on the proxy server and there's your traffic list. freeproxy is one that's fairly simple to setup & use. (handcraftedsoftware.org)

Hire somebody to stare at her the whole time...Some of the employees at the local Chinese buffet could do the trick...When I take my wife to the buffet, they stare at me the whole time to see if I m gonna eat off her plate(I dont eat the chinese food)

i know the real reason is that you just want to know all the good porn sites your employees go to so you don't have to search for them yourself... lazy ;)

SF.com was being blocked by several webfilters because people were posting pictures of scantily clad folks and hotlinking them. As a result, SF.com got blacklisted as a porn site for a bit. This is why we keep a sharp eye out for that stuff and delete it ASAP.

Sounds like your company needs to hire Mike Rich and his sharp eye!
