A marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, 'God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes.' The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, 'Here I am God. I'm still waiting.' It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform.

The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, 'What the heck is the matter with you? Why did you do that?' The Marine calmly replied, 'God was too busy today protecting the soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid stuff and act like an idiot. So, He sent me.'

???????????

I don't hate atheist. I feel that they have as much right to believe and practice their beliefs as I do. I only get irritated by atheist who feel that they have to push their beliefs, or restrict me in my personal life. I think where the problems arise are in the public sector where it is often difficult to separate personal life from public life due to chronological, space, legal, or financial issues. It is there that you and I both should be able to practice without hopefully not getting on each other's nerves too much. That's where the trouble usually occurs when both parties can not agree on a happy medium. :D

For example. In the example above (I am quite sure it never happened), the professor had no right to stand up in front of the class and mock God. He had to know that it could result in, at a minimum, some hard feelings. The marine, acting as an agent of the God he believed in, took matters into his own hands; which is very biblical. The professor had basically trampled on the marine's personal space & beliefs.

To clarify. The professor has a right to teach evolution and the science that supports that theory; however, he does not have to right to stand in a government supported public sector and mock any religion. Now, if it was a private university, then that's up to the university's own beliefs and ethics.

Man I have had this argument/discussion way too many times... Posting that in an of itself was a slight to atheism. Would it be anymore right if I went and cold-cocked the dumbass preacher that pretty much damns everyone on the south oval to hell every spring just because of what he was saying?

That example basically says atheists deserve to get punched in the face for stating their beliefs. It also goes on to paint academics as elitist *******s and then ties in a Marine just to make you feel all patriotic, blue-collar and good on the inside.

Anyway arguing from your example the professor said something out of line, then he should be reported to the ethics committee or whomever... Not hit in the face. And the marine who hit him in the face should be charged with assault. The whole thing is asinine.

It double ****es me off because I teach at OU and I am an atheist.

I never told him I was an atheist, or tried to persuade him that god doesn't exist. I have never looked down on someone because the belief in a god, but I have been countlessly told I am no better than some retarded monkey.

From my experiences it seems that atheists don't try to convince others that their religion is wrong, but others try to proselytize them and get angry when we refute what they are telling us. My $.02

we atheists feel the same way about overbearing christians who feel it is their duty to tell us why they are christian, why its good for them, and why it would be good for me.

So, if a professor was having a bad day and sat at his desk and said a prayer that the whole class heard, and a few atheists got upset and offended at his public prayer, would you condone a similar course of action that the marine took?
