Kelly's 'Raw,' But He's Learning Fast (http://www.redskins.com/news/newsDetail.jsp?id=35711)
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
May 4, 2008

Two days before the Redskins drafted Malcolm Kelly, team officials traveled to Oklahoma for a private workout with the tall, lanky wide receiver.

Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell was part of the contingent, and Campbell spent part of the workout throwing passes to Kelly.

That was a sure sign that Kelly was high on the Redskins' radar on draft day.

But Kelly slid to the middle of the second round--to the Redskins' surprise. So they chose him with the 51st overall selection in the draft.

One week later, Kelly is participating in his first Redskins practices at mini-camp.

Unlike top draft pick Devin Thomas and other young receivers on the Redskins' roster, Kelly could say that he developed a good rapport with Campbell heading into mini-camp.

"Jason helped me out a whole lot, just teaching me different stuff," Kelly said.

Thomas and tight end Fred Davis, the Redskins' other second round pick, may be more NFL ready than Kelly because they played in pro-style offenses in college.

Kelly, 6-3 and 210 pounds, has the size and skills to be a top NFL wide receiver, but at Oklahoma he played in a spread offense that emphasized a rushing attack.

With the Sooners, he had a limited number of pass routes.

"There are certain things that Coach [Jim] Zorn has already talked to me about--I am going to have to work on some things," Kelly said. "I am a little raw in my route-running ability, but it is stuff that I will nail down. It is stuff that I will work on and focus on."

At Oklahoma, Kelly developed into a top prospect. He appeared in 39 games, with 34 starts, and finished his career as the school's fifth-leading receiver with 144 receptions.

Last year, he started all 14 games and logged 49 catches for 821 yards and nine touchdowns.

Kelly is a native of Longview, Tex.

During mini-camp at Redskins Park, Kelly soaked in his first NFL experience.

"It is cool, especially having the guys come around actually trying to help you out," he said. "Santana [Moss], Antwaan [Randle El] and even James [Thrash]-all those guys are coming up to you and trying to help you out.

"Really, everybody has something to learn. It is a brand new offense, so everybody has something to learn. We are kind of on the same playing field."

Kelly feels he adjusted to the speed of the NFL game quickly. That's something that all rookies must pick up.

Despite his confidence in himself, it gave him an indication of how much he has to learn.

"The defensive backs break on [routes] a little bit better in the NFL," Kelly said. "But I am already finding new tricks and doing things that coaches are telling me to do. I don't want to show the route as much."

Kelly drew some pre-draft scrutiny for his speed in the 40-yard dash.

Head coach Jim Zorn and wide receivers coach Stan Hixon were more focused on how well he gets off the line of scrimmage.

"He is very explosive off the line of scrimmage," Zorn said. "He will get down the field very quickly."

And coaches believe his height will offer Jason Campbell a bigger target in the red zone. That's an area that has been a struggle for the Redskins' offense in recent years.

"I know he has this attitude--he is going to want to go and get it," Zorn said.

And then there's a matter of learning the terminology of the offense.

"I studied the plays [the night before practice] and the exact plays I studied were exactly what we ran," he said. "It's not as hard as people make it out to be. We have a lot of plays to learn, though.

"If I just take it day-by-day, I feel I ought to be pretty good." http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/678/kelly002gk7.jpghttp://img369.imageshack.us/img369/4272/kelly001ki0.jpg

Even former Sooners that didn't finish their career at OU:

Tashard Choice is more than excited to be a Dallas Cowboy and showed his enthusiasm during the mini-camp running back drills.

Fourth-round Choice is right pick for Dallas Cowboys (http://www.star-telegram.com/281/story/622404.html)
By CHAREAN WILLIAMS

IRVING -- Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Tashard Choice can run; he can catch; he can block.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones calls him "arguably the most complete back in the draft."

Choice also is good at washing dishes, vacuuming, mowing and raking.

His mother, Rose Hamm, calls him "a good kid."

There is only one thing, it seems, that Choice can't do:

"He can't cook," Hamm said, laughing. "Grits and eggs are about it, and Ramen noodles."

Choice, who resides in Jonesboro, Ga., began his college career at Oklahoma, where he redshirted in 2003. The Sooners welcomed Adrian Peterson the following year.

But the fact Choice got only 22 carries and one reception in 2004 playing behind Peterson had nothing to do with his transfer to Georgia Tech, Choice insists. Hamm was out of work, having broken her foot, and her other three sons were in trouble with the law.

Hamm needed Choice closer to home, though he was the one who suggested transferring.

"I'm real close to my mom," Choice said after a minicamp practice at Valley Ranch. "When she was at the house by herself and couldn't work, I had to come home. If I wanted to leave [because of playing time], I could have gone any other place in the country. But I came home to Georgia Tech, because it's like 15 minutes away from my mom. That's why they granted me the hardship to play [immediately]."

Choice, 23, began playing football when he was 4. It was a flag football league, but Choice, who already was playing tackle football with his older brother, kept knocking opponents to the ground.

"When you tackled somebody, you had to come out of the game," Hamm said. "So, every other play, he was out of the game. It took a while, but he finally got it down, and it's been on since then. I couldn't keep him out of cleats."

Football became Choice's first love and his saving grace.

With trouble all around him, including in his own house, Choice chose the straight and narrow.

"My mom stayed on me," Choice said. "She raised me and my older brother the same. It's just some people make the wrong decisions. I love the game of football. I didn't want to do anything to jeopardize me ... being able to play the game."

The one time his mother grounded him -- for getting stopped going 12 mph over the 45 mph speed limit -- Choice started crying, told his mother, "I never do anything wrong," and broke her heart.

"I gave him the keys back," Hamm said. "He was right: He never gave me a stitch of trouble."

Choice always made the honor roll in elementary, junior high and high school, Hamm said, and, at both OU and Georgia Tech, he was academic all-conference. In December, Choice graduated with a degree in History, Technology and Society, joining his stepfather, Barry Hamm, as the only college graduates in the family.

Choice's success, on and off the field, has inspired his brothers, who are out of jail, and "getting themselves together."

Choice, who rushed for more than 2,800 yards in his last two seasons at Georgia Tech, had expected to be drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs, where former Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey and former Georgia Tech running backs coach Curtis Modkins now are. Or maybe San Diego, where Chargers running backs coach Ollie Wilson watched several of Choice's games while an assistant with the Atlanta Falcons.

He certainly didn't expect to land in Dallas, especially after the Cowboys used a first-round choice on Arkansas running back Felix Jones. But Choice was the best player on the Cowboys' draft board at the 122nd pick.

"Even though we had drafted a running back, we just couldn't pass on a player who has all of his qualities, even at that position," Jones said. "... A guy like him should be able to get dressed out and go to the game, because he should be an outstanding special-teams contributor as well.

"You'd like for that third back to not only have a lot of things he can do, but also to do it on special teams. He has a chance to do that."http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3007/choice002tl0.jpghttp://img222.imageshack.us/img222/8753/choice001or5.jpg

Brooking back outside

Five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Keith Brooking has been moved to his natural weakside spot after spending most of the past three seasons playing middle linebacker out of necessity. Second-round draft choice Curtis Lofton is at middle linebacker, along with second-year Georgia product Tony Taylor.

Brooking has been candid about his preference to play in space as an outside linebacker but the switch might not be permanent.

"We've said from the very beginning that we're going to cross-train all of our guys," Smith said. "Curtis can play outside linebacker, too. Keith's natural position and the position he's probably had the most success in the league has been at 'Will' linebacker." http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/2824/loftonfalcons001fp0.jpg

The Redskins' Malcolm Kelly showed great hands, while their other new receiver, Devin Thomas, showed great speed. Both should expand the Redskins' offense. Plus, they are big targets, Kelly checking in at 225 pounds and Thomas at 224. Third cornerback: Currently, that spot belongs to Shawntae Spencer, but he will get plenty of competition from rookie Reggie Smith, a third-round pick. Smith showed some flashes during the minicamp. Due to his physical play, Smith is one of those players who will probably be a lot more effective once the pads go on. Others who could challenge for the third-corner spot are Tarell Brown, Marcus Hudson and Donald Strickland. (http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/default.asp?item=2200033&49ers)
Reggie Smith has very good balance and very good feet and appears to be a very instinctive football player. (http://49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=4205&section=PR%20News) http://static.nfl.com/static/content/public/image/getty/2008/09000d5d8081f110_gallery_600.jpg

My favorite pick of this years draft was Curtis Lofton. How did he look out there at (middle) linebacker? I know the LBs are going to cross-train but do you think the starting linebackers will look like this? Will, Keith Brooking. Mike, Curtis Lofton. Sam, Michael Boley. - (http://life.atlantafalcons.com/jmike811/blog)MidWest Falcon (http://life.atlantafalcons.com/jmike811/blog) The entire AF.com staff got excited when the team selected Lofton. We don't pick favorites, but we all have "our guys" heading into the draft. Just so happens we all liked Lofton. He looked solid at middle linebacker during mini camp. You didn't hear coaches screaming his name too much, which is a good sign. I think the team would be pleased with your predicted lineup if that's the way things shook out. Lofton still has a lot of learning to do and Brooking has shown he can play in the middle. As the new scheme comes on-line, we could see a Lofton, Boley, Brooking combo. Early on, however, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Brooking at a spot to make the most impact (that would middle linebacker). “You have to get in the best shape of your life really, I saw that in the mini-camp that we did,” said undrafted free agent J.J. Finley. “It's like the jump from high school to college all over again except it's even faster to me. If you want to compete you're going to have to be in the best possible shape and these guys know how to do that.”

“It's tough getting thrown in there with the older guys and some of them have been here for over ten years,” said Finley. “It's good to get out there with the rookies and learn what they're doing. That way when we jump out there with the veterans we don't look like idiots.” http://49ers.com/photos/thumbs/lrg-2061-jjfinley.jpg

Q&A with CB Reggie Smith (http://49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=4218)

Get to know more about the 49ers third-round draft pick, cornerback Reggie Smith, in this 49ers.com Q&A! Also, be sure to watch the Up Close segment on TV49 on Reggie!

We know you were still in bed when you actually got drafted, so at what point did the excitement actually set in?
Yeah, I was still in bed, in my little brother’s bed at my parents since they had moved all of my stuff out already. I was up, but I wasn’t all the way to where I knew what was going on. So, I was still a little groggy, but afterwards I was like “I just got drafted by the 49ers” and all of the history and things behind it hit me. I was just amazed.

What’s been the reaction by your family to this NFL opportunity?
I think they are real excited but we aren’t the type of people to show our emotions too much, but inside we are all very happy.

You played with Malcolm Kelly at Oklahoma. Did you talk to him throughout the draft process and did going against someone like that day in and day out help raise your game?
I texted him after he got picked up. I know Malcolm was kind of upset, thinking he should have gone a lot higher, which I thought so too. He was happy though once he was picked up and I think he feels it is a good fit for him. He prepared me greatly because he’s a big, fast strong receiver and I’m going to see a lot of those in this league so I needed to get ready for that.

Some people criticized you for not being fast enough to play corner in the NFL, but our GM Scot McCloughan said you have great play speed, and that you had no problem keeping up with Limas Sweed when you played against him last year. Do you think that’s the better perspective?
I think maybe they look too much at the 40. Everybody on both pro days at Oklahoma had slow times on that surface. We were like “wow, what’s going on, we never ran that slow before.” I think I play a lot faster on the field. I might not be able to do the testing type 40 thing but I know I run fast out here.

Did you study the 49ers roster and try to figure out who some of the players and coaching staff were before showing up for camp? How did you get yourself prepared to come in?
I actually looked it up online to see who my coaches were and realized that they were some of the guys I had met at the Combine. Other than that I tried to work out so I wouldn’t come in and be huffing and puffing too much out there.

How much easier was it to come to a new team since a few of your teammates from Oklahoma in Lewis Baker and JJ Finley signed here as undrafted FA’s?
It was good because I thought I was going to be here by myself, and that’s a little strange walking around and not knowing anyone, because I don’t talk much anyhow. Lewis is in the secondary with me and a lot of times at camp we were out on the field together so it’s good having him around. Until we get to know everybody else, we are kind of just bouncing off everything off each other. We plan to spend a lot of time in our playbook together before the OTAs start.

What was it like trying to defend a wide receiver like Isaac Bruce?
It is amazing. I watched him growing up, and also Nate Clements, all of those vets. I’m like wow, I’m actually here. Isaac is going to be good. He can do anything. I’m out there trying to cover him and it’s hard because he’s obviously been in this game way longer than me.

They plan to use you at corner here, but talk about your versatility to play safety, and then also even your background playing on special teams.
I think it just adds to my value. If it didn’t work out at corner, I can slide in and play the nickel or safety if need be. I think you can throw me in at different positions and I can help out. I worked gunner on punts during camp, but I want to make sure I get my shot at punt return too.

You started as a freshman at Oklahoma, do you have the same aspirations at this level?
I wasn’t expecting to start, it just happened that way in college and high school. I’m going to come out here and practice hard and learn from this veteran group in the secondary and wherever the chips fall, they fall. There is a lot of experience in this secondary here, listening to them talking and hearing their lingo, they know everything. I’ve never seem them be stumped so it’s great to have them to ask questions and learn all I can from them.

You missed the Fiesta Bowl with a broken toe. How difficult was that to miss your final college game?
It was tough, especially because we lost. I was out there seeing things from the sidelines that they probably didn’t see because it was going so fast. I’d think man, if he had just made this cut, it could have been a better play. So, it hurt me a lot not to be out there with the guys.

You played a bunch of different positions in high school at Santa Fe H.S. in Edmond, Oklahoma, lettering four-time as a defensive back, wide receiver and running back? What made you ultimately stick with the secondary?
I think playing all of those positions helped me out and made me versatile when I went off to college. Corner, I like it because you have to beat your guy. You either beat him or is he going to beat you, so every play it’s who is going to win this one? Confidence is huge because when you get beat, you’ve got to be quick to forget it and just win the next one. I just felt it suited me and as a DB, I have a better understanding of what the receiver might do since I played that position in high school as well. I was just blessed that I was able to play all of those positions and get a well-rounded feel for the game.

Outside of football, what are your hobbies and interests?
I spend a lot of time on Play Station 3, or surfing the net. I like to shop and look at shoes online. I used to be on Facebook a lot, but I don’t do that as much.

So what is something everyone should know about you?
I don’t know. I am a pretty shy guy. I don’t talk a lot. I’m not that talkative unless I really know somebody. It was strange, me and my roommate (Josh Morgan) didn’t say a word to each other the first night of camp. We were both just in our playbooks. Other than that, I can sew. I took Home Ec back in the day and I had to learn how to do all of that stuff. I can remember making a pretty big pillow one time. http://49ers.com/nm_files/Image/Draft%2008/ReggieSub1.jpghttp://49ers.com/photos/thumbs/lrg-2071-reggiesmith.jpg

The Bears on Wednesday announced that wide receiver Mark Bradley underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee earlier this month and is questionable to return for the July 23 start of training camp.

Bradley caught just six passes for 71 yards and 1 touchdown in limited action in 2007. General manager Jerry Angelo said in February at the NFL Scouting Combine that after the season Bears coaches indicated they regretted not giving the 2005 second-round pick more opportunities.

Plagued by injuries in his first two years with the Bears, Bradley missed the final nine games of his rookie season in 2005 with a torn ACL and five contests in 2006 with an ankle problem.

In 32 career games, the Oklahoma product has 38 catches for 583 yards and 4 TDs. Bradley produced the Bears’ longest play of the 2006 season with a career-long 75-yard TD reception from Brian Griese against the greatest team in the world.

To know Roy Williams is to misunderstand him.

Six years ago, he was given the opportunity to become the face of the Dallas Cowboys. As a rookie in 2002, he was one of the few bright spots on a 5-11 team, and his No. 31 jersey quickly overtook No. 22 in the Texas Stadium crowd.

Roy Williams is a perennial Pro Bowl selection, but even he has admitted to doubts about his pass coverage capabilities.
But now as the Cowboys prepare to christen a $1 billion stadium in 2009, there's a good chance Williams won't be around for the grand opening.

Tommie Harris is so awesome... way more awesome than $6 million (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3420201)

If he sounded skeptical as the Bears opened minicamp, it was because defensive tackle Tommie Harris is adamant that contract talks will conclude only when the three-time Pro Bowler is offered what he wants -- a four-year deal.
And, with the theme of this thread, here is a Tommie Harris picture:

This is by no means a knock at Harris. He is worth every penny to da Bears, not just on the field, but off the field, too.

HARTLEY HAMMERS THEM HOME (http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=334&storyID=8075)

One Bronco that saw more field time than usual on Friday was kicker Garrett Hartley. Hartley a college free agent signing out the University of Oklahoma took all the special team field goal reps during practice. Hartley, who is one of the two kickers on the roster vying field goal duties with the departure of long-time Broncos' kicker Jason Elam. He said the pressure is there regardless of how many kicks you get a practice.

"There’s always pressure everyday, regardless if I only have four kicks or today, 24," Hartley said. "We just have to build on it, and I have to roll with it."

Matt Prater, the only other kicker on the Broncos' roster, saw time with the club late last season as a kickoff specialist. Prater netted over a 67 yard average on his kickoffs.

"Prater has the strongest leg I have ever contended with, and he’s very accurate," Hartley said. "It’s definitely going to be great competition."

Hartley, who was connecting on field goals of 50 yards and beyond during practice, said Elam set a high standard for kickers in Denver.

"The guy is a legacy," he said. "If anything, it’s definitely big shoes to fill. Hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to do so." http://www.denverbroncos.com/resources/custom/Team/2008/hartley_mug_08.jpg

Unfortunately, imageshack is being picky, so I cannot add the AP picture right now, but there is a newish one up on the Ravens official site! I will add it later to coincide with "Sooners in NFL (Pictures)" guidelines :D
