Do they work in the sense that my body is getting something positive from taking them or is this just another herbal/voodoo/witch doctor home remedy bull**** thing?

If you eat a balanced diet it is rare that your body will actually have much use for a multivitamin.

My diet is about as unbalanced and bad as you could possibly imagine.

What is your goal? If it's to get big, eat some steak and work out. If you are not feeling well go see a nutritionist/ physician. At worst you will waste some money by taking them.

My kids like the gummy bear vitamins. You should give them a try.

Then you're already taking a multi-vitamin. You tell us. Do they work?

I was kidding. I don't really take Flintstone's vitamins.

At any rate, I bought some. We'll see.

When the Doc put me on a low sodium diet I put away the salt shaker. The reason salt is iodized is because few people get enough iodine in their regular diet. When I mentioned this to the Doc, he suggested a multivitamin with 100% recommended daily dosage of iodine. Since I have been taking them I have not had goiter.

Have have read that they aren't good for you. They are such high doses, that your body cannot absorb them as quickly, and you wind up eliminating a fair deal of them without gaining any use from them. I found this to: Are Vitamins good or bad (http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/menshealth/feature/vitamins.htm)

I've been taking the Men's One-A-Day for the past month and half or so and I do feel better than I had before. I started taking it because I figured that I wasn't getting all the vitamins in my daily diet. I didn't expect to feel better or anything, so I've been pleasently surprised.

take it with a meal, or before you go to bed. that will allow your body the time to metabolize it so that it is effective.

The best thing you could do is get your *** out in the sun, till up a garden while sweating your balls off and grow every vegetable you can stomach for your own consumption. If you can't do that then I would recommend the "MegaMens" multivitamin at GNC. It will turn your urine orange and smell like buttfungus but will make you gitty with good nutrition.

Agreed. That's a big "if" for most everyone though.

I'm kinda curious on achiro's take on this. Where are you?

i hear that when they clean out port-a-crappers they find structures made of multi-vitamins that people crap out, undigested

my mom used to grind them up with a mortar and pestle

i've also heard you are much better off eating the foods that contain said vitamins because they also have the secondary stuff that help you absorb them correctly

I'm here.:P Sicem needs all the freaking help he can get. Get some sun boy and eat a sammich.

Now as far as supplements. I kind of agree with the article linked earlier about the mega doses. Unless there is a specific need someone is trying to address, just the normal(or slightly above) dosages are usually fine. It's best if you can eat a balanced diet and even better if you can grow your own in highly composted soil. Most people are not going to have tests done for each and every vitamin and mineral to see if they have enough in their systems so a multi is usually good to be sure its all there. I usually recommend for my patients to take a quality fish oil supplement if they only want to take one thing. A multi B is also good.
Yermom is right, one of the big differences between a quality vitamin and a cheap one is the ease of absorbtion. Over the years we have many sets of xrays of folks with full pills in their colon ready to leave...undigested. ;)

Don't know if this is going to help answer your question but, a Blood Specialist has me on 2000mg of Omega 3 Fish Oil Concentrate, 400mg Vit E, 750mg Aspirin, and 20mg Policosanol. I'll find out in a month if it makes any difference.

on the other hand......

I had a conversation a while back with one of the top Urologist in the midwest who said that if he could do his career all over again, he would sell vitamins because they are the biggest money maker/scam in medicine.

Go figure.

I usually tell my patients that, at reasonable doses, the only thing vitamin supplements can hurt is your wallet. If you have the money and they make you feel better, do it.

Omega 3 and plant sterols are a separate issue. As far adequate mineral and vitamin intake is, just take one that is well absorbed and that does not exceed the FDA recommended dose. You particularly need to be cautious with the fat soluble vitamins (ADEK) because they can accumulate and cause some issues if you take too much. The water soluble vitamins if taken in excess just make your urine nice and bright.

You probably don't want to get a discussion started here on neutraceuticals; however, there is evidence out there that supports many of them such as Omega 3 fatty acids, and plant sterols.

Studies show that if you eat a balanced diet, you don't need the daily vitamin. Big question is who eats a balanced diet? Not me.

My diet consists of the following:
Junk food (i.e. cookies, chips, etc.)
Chicken (almost always fried but maybe grilled/baked 10% of the time)
Beef (in the form of burgers and steak)
Italian (almost always baked ziti, pizza, and lasagna)

That is 99% of my diet. The only vegetable I eat is corn and only when it's grilled and on the cob. I never ever eat any fruit of any kind. I do not drink water so my fluid intake is made up entirely of alcohol and Mt. Dew.

Which explains the pasty white skin, dark sunken in circles under the eyes, and a look better suited to a slab in a morgue than a college student.
