It's been five years and 4,000 casualties since GWB proclaimed "Mission Accomplished". Now only 100 more years to go.

This is a [yawn] thread. It has gone without saying for a long time that W is an idiot of epic proportions. Even my right wing friends have given up on defending him. Unfortunately, being a joke of a President has serious implications. Having a President who is not taken seriously domestically and world-wide has not helped our stature in this world.

"We whooped Sadam's *** and good"

If anyone implies that Bush wasn't claiming victory prematurely they are fooling themselves.

We never displayed any such banner when returning to home port during my five years in the Navy.

Pube arrogance is astounding.

Why is there is no doubt in my mind that some left want to see us lose in Iraq just to embarrass Bush and pin the blame on him?

Probably because socialism believes the ends justifies the means.

At this point, can anything embarrass Bush any more? You keep buying into the "Democrats want us to lose in Iraq" line. Besides, I thought we already won in Iraq didn't we? If we have already won, let's get the hell out of there and tell the Iraqi people it is time you take care of yourselves!

I hate to say this but....

He is still President.

Why doesn't he do something about it?

If he fails it will be because of all the democrats that somehow kept him from getting the job done, even though they passed most of his requests through without hesitation... Bush has no one to blame but Cheney and Rove.

Don't let Donald "We Don't Need That Many Troops" Rumsfeld off the hook.

Rumsfeld made the mistake of thinking he, a civilian, was an expert on military strategy. Bush and co. made the mistake of believing him. As frightening as it seems, our troop nos. would have been much less during the invasion, but for some hard advocacy by Gen. Franks and the few others in the Pentagon the White House would hear. Rumsfeld actually wanted the invasion largely performed by Special Forces ground attacks and air strikes, but was talked into the final plan by the Pentagon, with far fewer troops than the generals wanted. Wrong target, wrong strategy.

Rumsfeld did some good things as SecDef. He gave the military the kick it needed into the 21st Century rather than still preparing to fight the Cold War. The prosecution of the war itself in Iraq was not the problem, it's that nobody apparently gave a second's thought to what would happen afterwards.

He did do some good as Sec. of Defense. The Pentagon has traditionally been a kingdom in itself, used to getting its own ways and bullying civilians in Washington. I see the invasion and the post-invasion as being interrelated - the invasion force was easily enough to topple Hussein, but way too small to successfully occupy, stablize, and keep out outside elements after the fall. The generals correctly recommended a total force of over 300,000 troops, but Rumsfeld and co. dismissed the experts, and the rest is history.

What, it shot a few missiles? I didn't know the military had fallen so low as to celebrate the successful launch of its munitions. So do the soldiers raise a little Mission Accomplished banner every time their M-16 don't jam?

While not accomplished, the mission is doing pretty good seeing as how the mission has become: Kill a ****load of bad guys on their ground, not ours.

The problem is our folks are dying from inanimate objects they just happen to be driving by.

Not to mention no WMDs, no aluminum tubes, and no yellowcake.

If all our casualties were a result of combat with terrorists, then I'd agree with you.

It ****es me off to no end that my comrades are killed by scum that have long left the scene of carnage.

Screw that country, let 'em all kill each other for all I care.
