I was thinking about trying Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. I've never read any of his stuff. Thoughts?

I also want some sort of Jack the Ripper / Sherlock Holmes / Victorian mystery. Any of you ever read Anne Perry?

Gaiman is pretty interesting, or odd. I read his Anansi Boys and Good Omens, but haven't read Neverwhere.

His work on The Sandman is suppose to be pretty good.

I'd also throw out Warren Ellis' The Devil You Know .

Whatcha lookin' for?

Best books I've read lately are "I Am Charlotte Simmons" and "The Tender Bar." Dresden Files are good escapism fiction, a little too reliant on sarcasm though. I'm halfway through John Grisham's library now and digging it.

Good advice in this thread. (http://www.soonerfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91725)

I'm a huge fan of Richard Russo. He has a new one out (the "Nobody's Fool" Russo) and I've also been thinking about getting the Steve Martin book. Looks like an easy weekend read and I've heard it is surprisingly insightful.

Other than that, it's getting hot outside and I got no time fer readin'.

You will get tired of him repeating descriptions of certain things for the first three books, it gets better though. And srsly, you can plow through one in a weekend.

For me Nerwhere was kind of meh. If you are wanting to read Gaiman you might try American Gods.

Excellent. There's a team pimping Dresden Files novels now. My work here is done. :D

I still need to get the latest one. I'm currently reading the fourth book in Butcher's Codex Alera series, "Captain's Fury". Very, very good epic fantasy, but not as easy a read as the Dresden stuff.

I finished it last week. It reads VERY quickly and it's over much sooner than you'd like it to be, but it's good.

I'd LOVE to tell you a few things about it, but i'd hate to ruin anything.

The only time I get to read for leisure is while on the airplanes. I haven't read a book at home in years.

If you're going to read Gaiman, start with American Gods. Anansi Boys, Stardust and Good Omens are also great. Never read Neverwhere, but I did like the BBC series.

I really liked the Harry Dresden books (I finished them over spring break). Right now I'm reading the Hollow series by Kim Harrison. So far they've been good. They are nice light fiction along the line of the Harry Dresden, except the hero's a girl that lives with a vampire. They are fun to read so far.

If you're really geeky think about Dan Simmons Hyperion and Endymion series.

Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio and Darwin's Children was pretty good.

Peter F. Hamilton's Reality Dysfunction series.

Tad Hamilton's Otherworld series.

Darwin's Radio was outstanding. I liked Darwin's Children but not as much.

I tried to read the first book of Otherworld and just couldn't get into it.

Haven't read the rest.

Yeah, the first Otherworld book was slow, and they get somewhat better as the series goes, but for a Tad Williams series to me it was a disappointment. Then again, I don't know if anything he writes will measure up to the Memory, Thorn, and Sorrow trilogy.

I've totally geeked out and started reading some of the Warcraft novels, especially since they are available as 'Archive' versions (3 or 4 novels in one bigger paperback). The War of the Ancients trilogy was pretty interesting, and I just started the Warcraft Archive which starts with The Day of the Dragons. Lots of Deathwing in that one.

Isn't American Gods the sequal to Anansi Boys? Why read it first?

Frozen Sooner
4/29/2008, 07:29 PM
Because 1) American Gods isn't the sequel to Anansi Boys, 2) American Gods is superior reading to Anansi Boys, and 3) The events in Anansi Boys occur after the events in American Gods. I think. But I know that American Gods came out first.

reevie
4/29/2008, 07:48 PM
Ok, well I thought it was the sequel, not the first story.

Frozen Sooner
4/29/2008, 07:53 PM
:D No worries. They're only very loosely related anyhow-you can read one without the other. Personally, I think American Gods is much better anyhow.

And being that you're a comic guy, you really should read the Sandman stuff. It's beyond bizarre, particularly considering when it came out.
