April 25, 1901: New York requires car tags

107 years ago today, the New York legislature passed a measure making it the first state to require license plates for automobiles by law. Owners of automobiles were obliged to register their names and addresses along with a description of their vehicle with the office of the secretary of state.

My vote for the coollest license plate evar in North America

The state sent each owner a small license plate, at least three inches high, which bore the owner's initials. The fee to register an automobile was one dollar. In 1901, the state received $954 in registration fees.

Anti-government types hate license plates. In fact, the way the scum that perpetrated the Murrah massacre was busted was because the car he was driving northbound on I-35 as he fled Oklahoma lacked a tag. At the time, that practice was a "statement" made by those of his ilk.

Perhaps of interest to Oklahomans, ours is one of the few states that sells car tags through state "tag agents" which are operated for profit by private individuals. Your correspondent has no idea how that phenomenon evolved, but it probably involved copious campaign contributions to members of the state legislature.

Some people get quite creative with personalized (a/k/a "vanity") tags

As you may know, Oklahoma's tag design is currently under revision. Soon, our tags featuring the Osage shield that is the dominant feature of the state flag will be replaced by a new design. State officials claim a redesign is necessary because too many of the current tags are old and faded. I have no idea why officials, in the alternative, couldn't just require people whose tags are more than ten years old to simply purchase new ones with the current design, but apparently that is unsatisfactory for some reason. Perhaps there's more money in sale of a brand-new design for the private entities who sell Oklahoma tags.

The people in the Virginia DMV appear to be somewhat dim-witted given they are charged with ensuring no application for a specialized vanity tag contains offensive or seckshually explicit language

Oklahoma is not the only state to allow special interest groups to petition for creation of a distinctive tag. In fact, at least one Oklahoman beleives its gotten out of hand and remarked, "they oughtta just sell you a blank plate with month and year stickers in the corner and a Sharpie.";)

This is my current favorite specialty license plate. I wonder if it is made of reflective material like ordinary plates, or if the drivers glow illuminates it.

Homey, the Show-Me state has the for profit tag agencies as well. And yes, their ownership is usually handed out in "political favor" fashion to large campaign contributors of the victorious governor.

Personally, I love the idea of tag agencies (obviously without the patronage.)
