Texas sophomore point guard D.J. Augustin will declare for the NBA draft and forgo his final two seasons of eligibility, the university announced Wednesday.

Augustin won't sign with an agent -- yet. But that's only as a precautionary move to make sure he doesn't get injured before the June 16 withdrawal deadline before the June 26 draft. The deadline to declare for the draft is Sunday.
Texas' staff isn't expecting him to return.

Augustin was a consensus first-team all-American and an academic all-American. He led the Big 12 in assists at 5.8 a game and averaged 19.9 points a game (second in the conference) for the Longhorns, who lost to Memphis in the elite eight.

The Longhorns won a school-record 31 games and a share of the Big 12 regular season championship. Augustin won the Bob Cousy Award as college basketball's top point guard.

Augustin is projected as a lottery pick in the NBA draft.

No sighs of relief yet, Abrams is still a threat. Good luck to the kid though, he was pretty fun to watch (against anyone but OU...)

I will not miss this guy for sure. Abrams should follow suit.

UTerus has some other really good players, but Augustin was the one who would get it to them and would make them look better. Make no mistake, Augustin was the main reason we couldn't beat them. We had no answer for him offensively, whether he was shooting or passing. If James or Abrams were leaving, I would believe that UTerus would still be top 10. Now, I believe that OU SHOULD have the upper hand this year.

"Peggy Hill, how did you keep your star players at Texas for more than one season?"

"Right now, I have the opportunity to test the waters to see where I stand," Abrams said. "If I'm comfortable with where I feel I'll be drafted, I'll stay in the draft. If not, I'll be back for my senior year."

No way he doesn't come back, because he won't be drafted period.

Abrams has zero game for the NBA besides shooting the 3, he will be back

I've heard talk saying that the OKC Sonics should trade up and go after Augustin. I don't think that's a bad idea. They could use a good point gaurd like him. He probably won't be a Chris Paul, but I think he's got the potential to be good in the NBA.

BTW, the Sonics have 6 first round pics in the next 3 years and I think 13 overall pics (though the 13 might be over the next four, I forget).

Do they not have the first pick in the draft this year?

Two words: Lottery balls.

The morning animal was saying they should pick up beasley (assuming their lottery placement is high enough) and then trade up for augustin with their second first round pick. I believe because of their record they can't be placed any lower than 5th.

Abrams has also decided to go pro, but like Augustine has yet to sign an agent and Chalmers is doing the same thing.

Any team that passes on Derrick Rose will regret it.

Even over Beasley? That's a tough pick.

Even over Beasley? That's a tough pick.

I know, and I think that Beasley will be a great pro. I just think that Rose will end up turning some decent team into a very competitive one, and quickly. A la Chris Paul.

I hope the Bulls can somehow make a move to get him, but John Paxson is a mastermind at screwing up drafts. Even if the Bulls had a chance to draft him we would instead draft another player in the mold of Noah and Thomas...

The Sonics could use Rose, he is a team changer like Deron Williams and Paul

Depends on what the particular team's needs are

With Augustin, and now Chalmers from KU going pro, I think OU could be a the pre-season pick to win the conference next year, if not #2 behind Texas.

Kansas has some talent comng in so it will be a nice fight for 1st place, but I would have to give us the edge.

On the other hand, who in the league has two perimeter defenders to guard Beasley and Durant both, especially since Beasley can take a smaller defender into the post? Not very many teams.

If we get the first or second pick, we take Beasley.
