So I spent half the day Saturday Striper fishing on Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. I have been 2 times before and never landed a fish myself, but Saturday was my revenge day. We got on the water at 6 a.m. and fished til 12:45. The water was very high compared to the many times I've been on that lake throughout my life.
I caught a 14 pound Striper, an 11 pound striper and also caught a 5 ft. long gar, but we didn't let the gar in the boat because those things are nasty. My 2 buddies that were with me caught 1 fish a piece, a 10 pounder and 5 (or 6) pounder. We never missed a bite. We were very pleased w/the guide we used..he really knew exactly what to do and what to look for. Seemed much better than the 2 previous guides I've used. My face has a nice red sunburn tint to it now, but it was well worth it. Here's some pics..I wasn't going to post the pics w/me in them because I'm a farkable guy :D But I decided to include them so you could get an idea of the size of these fish.

Well, other than fish..we caught hell from our wives cause the guide kept us out a little longer than I thought he was going to. :D
And we only took one car and the gals were ready to go shopping, but had to wait for us to return.

For sure. It's always been my favorite lake. I'm lucky enough to have family with boats and places to stay in the area there. But some day if I ever strike the jackpot I'll buy a vacation condo down there myself.

My wife's grandad took me fishing 15yrs ago down below Keystone for some Striper fishing, we never got a bite from one but as he was starting to reel in his line the rod doubled over.
About 3minutes into the fight the little bastard surfaced, a 29lb spoonbill...only one i've ever caught.
Other than the sand bass run in almost the same place the next year, that was without a doubt the most fun fishing EVER!
Those spoonbill pull like a locomotive.

OK, I'm not an avid fisher, but I've been enough to know my local fish.

Spoonbill? WTH?

I know it's a catfish, but I have never even seen one. Are those around OK?

My Uncle used to snag them around Miami, Tenkiller, and Keystone dam. He'd bring home some that were 4-5 feet long. Pretty good eatin.

No, that was with a good friend of mine. He "had" the entire striper set-up with that 24 ft fishmaster you see there in the background. We would go net our own monster shad on Fort Gibson Lake then head to Beaver and stay for 3-4 days. That morning we caught a 23, 20, 18, 16 and 5 ft gar in about an hour and a half. Amazing time. My buddy is in the mortgage business and had to sell his boat  so I don't get to go nearly as much any more. If you ever go to Beaver use Don Andreasen of beaverfeverguide service. He is the best in the country.

Impressive, that sucks that your buddy had to sell his boat.
I'll keep that name in mind in case I ever end up going out on that lake. Also, if you ever go out on Lake Ouachita let me know. I'll get you some guides' names and phone numbers. Especially this most recent guide I used last weekend, he was really good.
The best on Lake Ouachita is Greg Willingham http://www.fishinglakeouachita.com/
..but he was booked up so I used a guide named David Donham this time. Which ended up being just fine with me.
