At least I guess he must have arrived on the North American continent. I can't think of any other reason why the bells of St. Patrick's church across the street (and just about at window level) have been ringing loudly and continually for the last 25 "blessed" minutes. If it doesn't stop soon, I may have to change my board name to QuasimodoSooner.

ENOUGH WITH THE BELLS ALREADY !!!

CNN just said that 22% of the United States is Catholic. That's quite a lot.

If these bells don't stop soon, there may be several fewer. :(

Yes, he was in the Hitler Youths, like all non-Jewish German boys were at his age.

Yes, he was in the Hitler Youths, like all non-Jewish German boys were at his age.

After 1937, that was generally true.

However, In 1943 he was drafted into the Luftwaffe anti-aircraft troops. When his duty required him to dig in and slug it out in defense of his country, he deserted in 1945 and bailed back to his family's home in Traunstein.

I just kinda have a problem with a guy who deserts. period.

Other than that, he seems like a cool guy.

I get where you are coming from, but step back and look at the bigger picture.

A person fought with distinction in the Nazi army and was awarded a Iron Cross. Nowadays he is a damn Nazi, spit on him!

A person decides he can't fight for a government like Hitler's and he is a deserting coward.

Almost a no win situation don't you think?

No, like I said I see where he is coming from. I myself don't much like my government (understatement of the year) but I would put my life on the line to save my country. But it is still no win for many WWII era germans these days.

If you believe in forgiveness...

It would seem he's the perfect role model.

I didn't know there was a Nazi army? There was a German army and there were certain divisions that required being a Nazi.

I saw him in Denver once

that was the last Pope, not this one.

i have a buddy who used to live in NW Denver (Highland Park, before it gentrified) and before he got married (now i never see him) he and I used to hang out, drink cheap beer on his porch and listen to Miles Live Evil, Skynard or Quadrophenia and whatnot. in the mornings, the best way to walk off a decent hangover was to go to the local tamale place. a pink converted gas station on Tejon. there was a picture of the old woman who always worked there being blessed by the Pope behind the counter. those were some righteous tamales and little breakfast burritos.

he's whipped now, but being from southern Missouri basically, he had some damned fine hillbilly in him.

good times.
