What it boils down to is that the membership is probably the most affluent in the country, doesn't need ANY television revenue, and lots of cameras and sponsor-related stuff has always been considered "unseemly" and "intrusive." Basically, the membership sees this as their private party and only grudgingly let the rest of the world into it.

Still wondering why every year the "fans" at the The Master's are "patron's"..but only at The Masters.

Saw that Tiger hasn't broken par in the first round since 2002. He better hurry up...two back with only 68 holes to play! :)

I read the membership dues are $250,000 - $500,000 and the place is closed from June - October.

Well, so far so good for my prediction...good shot on 13 for birdie for Tiger if he can get up and down. Johnson sure is tearing it up...missed an ace at 12 by inches. But curious...the website says Johnson is 3 under but the Amen Corner coverage says 4 under...so not sure, but he did just birdie 12 and 13.

Phil 2 under...after two holes!!!

The Maestro

Tiger using The Maestro method on golf. 2 shots to get over a par 5. Two chips...two putts. Four shots from 30 feet and the first bogey of the day.

I could've done that!

Funny how he never gets going early on the first round at The Master's.

And let's hear it for OSU phenom, Chucky Three Sticks! The guy dominated at the college level and was supposed to compete with Tiger...he fired a sweet 78 today and STILL has done nothing of merit in a major!

I identified Jack with my dad pretty closely. They sort of look alike, are exactly the same age (born the same week, if I remember right), and both of them were my idols growing up. I remember in '86 thinking it was so amazing that such a creaker could win. Dad and I were BOTH joking about the "old man," and I really believed it at the time.

Funny what just a few years will do. Both Jack and my dad were both only six years older than I am today.

eldrick is gonna need to shoot 65 or better to win.

immelman, casey, snedaker, flesh didn't back up much (like media love boy Mickleson and Poulter).

half those guys are going to be gagging like crazy tomorrow and post 74, but they all won't. all things being equal, as usual, unless Tiger shoots 63, your winner is Immelman, Sned, Flesch, or Casey. those guys may choke but they all won't.

now that's one scenario:

the other is all those guys shoot 37 on the front and Eldrick is 3 under out the box.

then, it get's interesting.

King Crimson
4/12/2008, 07:11 PM
either Immelman will make the turn up three or give the 3 shot lead up quick on the front.

playing in the last group, he's got 75 written all over him. however, like i say, somebody is going to shoot 68 tomorrow. Immelman just needs to get the ball in the hole, and no doubles.

the Masters is totally overrated by the rank and file. it has about the LEAST tradition of all the majors.

so what a "no-name won"? whoever played the best golf won, that's how it go....not who looks pretty on TV.

i laugh my *** off every year when people get on this board and yammer away about Augusta and how much the British Open sucks. i hate to ruin the fun, but Augusta National was designed to resemble links golf courses, particularly St. Andrews off the tee...with wide fairways and multiple avenues of play/approaches to greens, etc.

BigRedJed
4/14/2008, 04:14 PM
I don't know much about Augusta beyond what I see on the tube... ...although I have been there. I was running around SC, NC and GA a few years back and took a side trip through Augusta on my way to Savannah. Got right up to the gates, looking down Magnolia Lane, before realizing that there was no way possible that I would get anywhere near stepping foot beyond the gate itself. From the gate, BTW, you can't see any of the actual course.

The guard was very friendly, though, and suggested that if I wanted to buy some gear I needed to go to the Augusta visitor's center, downtown. So I went down there to find out that they didn't actually sell AN/Masters stuff there, they just had a price list (no pictures), and would call the pro shop for you and place your order and run your credit card.

After doing that you had to go back to the course -- not to the main gate, the service gate -- to pick up your stuff. The service gate is way down a side street, and has a lovely view of... ...the parking lot. Privacy fencing and hedges are all around the course. Don't expect to see a single blade of grass than comes into play at the tournament.

That said, on that trip I stayed in Greenville, SC for a few days at an Embassy Suites that had playing privileges at Verdae Greens (http://www.verdaegreens.com/), which is supposed to have a similar feel to AN, as far as trees, topography, grass, etc. It had hosted a Nike Tour event the week before and was still set for a tour event. The rough was unreal. All I know is that I was at the time consistently shooting in the low-mid 80s at home, and of the half-dozen times I played Verdae Greens I counted myself lucky to break 100 once or twice.

Not sure what that has to do with the Masters, other than it will probably be the closest I will ever come to playing Augusta National.
