I don’t know if this is new news or old news, but it’s pretty cool.

Tracy Letts won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for his August: Osage County play.

Wikipedia has an entry on Tracy Letts.

I love the quote from Tracy’s mom, Billie Letts: "I try to be upbeat and funny. Everybody in Tracy's stories gets naked or dead."

Tracy's parents, Dennis and Billie Letts were both professors at SOSU when I went to school there.

This is the NY Times review of the play

Billie is the author who wrote Where the Heart is, which made Oprah's Book Club and was made into a movie of the same name, starring Natalie Portman.

Also one of Billie's best friends is Molly Levite Griffis, a Norman author and book editor/publisher who used to own a great little shop in town called Levite of Apache. Molly published some of the late OU Sports Information Director and Newbery Award winner (Rifles for Watie) Harold Keith's books, including his last, The Sound of Strings, but I digress. Molly wrote a book a few years back called You've Got Mail, Billie Letts, which basically chronicles the letters between the two friends, including during the writing of Where the Heart Is.

Anyway, my point is that the Letts family's roots run deep in the Oklahoma literary world, and they have some great connections to OU. Congratulations to Tracy on his Pulitzer.

Apparently literary awards don't play as well here as bad movies, sucky bands, or snotrockets blown into shower drains.

Sounds like a great play. I didn't know the author had met my wife.
