NORMAN -- An Oklahoma team that worked out just once during the week was rusty Saturday in a scrimmage at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. OU completed a 92-play scrimmage, the last major tune-up before next Saturday’s Red/White Game.

“It was just OK,” said Stoops, who postponed two practice during the week to allow a few injured players time to heal and return to playing form. “We practiced only once all week and it showed. We weren’t too sharp and there were way too many penalties.

“But when one side isn’t doing well, the other is and that’s the way it is any time we scrimmage.”

The defense had the better of it Saturday, although the offense did push across a pair of touchdowns. The first was a one-yard run by true freshman running back Justin Johnson. The play capped a nine-play, 70-yard march behind second-team quarterback Joey Halzle.

The second score was a 3-yard pass from Sam Bradford to Jermaine Gresham, the culmination of a seven-play, 70-yard drive.

The defense limited the offense to just 77 yards on 33 rushes. Sooner quarterbacks completed 33-of-60 for 416 yards.

Cornerback Jonathan Nelson deflected two passes and picked off another. Linebacker Travis Lewis and defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger both logged sacks, while linebacker Keenan Clayton led the team with 11 tackles.

“The corners played exceptionally,” Stoops said of his secondary. “Those guys have competed well.

“The defensive line has put on a lot of pressure too and that’s the biggest thing.”

The offense mixed in three trick plays, a flea-flicker, a tight end reverse to Gresham and a reverse pass. The rush for Gresham yielded four yards, but the others were less successful.

“They didn’t really work like we had hoped, but we hadn’t practiced them so you can’t expect much yet,” said Bradford.

Bradford was 13-of-20 for 158 yards and one touchdown. Joey Halzle completed 14-of-22 passes for 177 yards.

The top receivers were Juaquin Iglesias and Gresham, both of whom caught five balls. Iglesias’ catches went for 53 yards, Gresham’s for 52.

Mossis Madu led the OU rushes with 11 carries for 38 yards.

The Red/White Spring Game is set for Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance, $10 the day of the game. The contest will not be televised.

the kickers were looking rough

i liked the way Clayton looked out there. the QBs seemed to be on the run a lot. i hope that is more on the DL looking good than the OL looking bad

Sounds like Clayton is adjusting to the LB position quite well

Doesnt seem the O-line is doing much to help our RBs do much?

And to think I was worried about the linebacking corps this year.

Those boys were swingin' hammers out there.
