from a number (860)956-9988 this week? I got one and all I heard on the other end was spanish. I brushed it off as nothing, but I have been hearing that it is some kind of scam, and they are trying to force people to pay $99/min for these calls.

I don't get to watch the news much being in Bizzell from 5pm to 2am, so I was wondering if any of you guys have heard anything about this?

Well on another website for "mystery calls" I read this message from someone who evidentally does understand spanish....

"My provider is BERGA communications in Oklahoma I was hit by this call they are offering green cards to illegal mexicans for 50 bucks. Calls are coming from Ixtapa Mexico close to Arizona border. ORALE!"
For those who are illegals I would suggest this is a scam/trap/great opportunity to NOT ANSWER....
Caller ID: 860-956-9988

Apparently you are an illegal mexican.

there is an up and coming scam going around that uses VOIP to spoof their number (i.e. if callinga 405 area number, they'll spoof their number to have a 405 area code). the scams vary, some are jibberish in some strange language and youre supposedly charged for the call. another is similar to the nigerian scam emails. someone will speak to you (typically in a thick african-esque accent). most people hang up just like they delete spam. the thing is, you cant stop them from calling over and over. you cant block the number (it's voip). all you can really do is change your number. some people have reported them calling back a dozen times a day.

I got an email talking about this the other day. It mentioned a few different area codes. So I checked it out on snopes. Here's the link to the info.

Also I just looked up the 860 area code, here's what it says.

http://www.areacodehelp.com/where/area_code_860.shtml

Apparently it's a Connecticut area code

i like replying to email scams. making them think i am really interested, and that they'll be in for a nice payoff while i string them along wasting their time. then i say im chris hanson from dateline and the IP address and a copy of every email has been forwarded to the fbi. they never reply after that for some reason.
