I have a Seagate Free Agent and it has worked great (about $125 for 500GB). The computer geeks at work like the Maxtor best.

i've got a 250G Western Digital mybook, which is all music. it's amazing the amount of storage you can buy these days for little cost.

i'm gonna buy 500G for video here purty quick.

I'm staying away from Western Digital, the last 3 drives crapped out pretty quickly, they used to build decent drives at one time and now it appears that Seagate and Maxtor are a better choice.

Fujitsu, do they make desktop drives anymore? At one time they were reliable.

haven't had any problems with mine. i've had a maxtor drive screw me, too. i treat all this stuff as disposable and backup shizz on discs. if it was made to last, it wouldn't be made of cheap *** plastic.

hell crap damn, you can buy 180G in something that's about the size of your credit card....these days.

Yep, but I like my drives BIG. And that has nothing to do with making up for a lack of something else. ;)

I think they're called external drives.

Today's WOOT side deal offers a 320 GBSeagate for $69 (http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/showcaseb/default.asp?showcaseb=woot&source=EWB040108W). At that price, you can take two.

that IS a pretty good deal. but, what does "recertified" mean?

I'm guessing it means that it was refurbished and is for resale with a new warranty. It's definitely worth reading the fine print.

If you take one apart you'll find that the plastic housing just contains a regular old hard drive like you'd install in your PC case, plus a circuit board that contains the interface logic (usb, IEEE 1394 or whatever), and maybe a blue led or something.

I will say that I've had two 500 GB Western Digital drives fail in the last 6 months. I back up one from the other, and it's a good thing that I do.

it seems like when i go to epinions.com and research suggestions that there's good and bad reviews. i guess that there isn't a brand/model out there that doesn't get "it's share" of bad reviews? without spending $3-400 on a model, it appears that seagate/maxtor/etc. seem about even?

Seagate and Maxtor are the same drives, Seagate bought Maxtor something like 5 years ago.

there's people who are fans and who aren't fans of every drive manufacturer. normally i was pretty much a maxtor only guy. Last week i did buy a 750 gb wd my book for about $160 from Best Buy
