MC5 is all about BillyBall. BB, who spekked not too while back on the Pretty Things....so, he's hep.

Pretty Things put out a LOT of crap....but, Bowie covers them twice on Pinups.

they have some really good "rockin-blues, proto-punk, British Invasion"...working the same ground as the Yardbirds type stuff.

No, it's pretty poppy, for sure. They should be hitmakers. But the industry isn't really set up for a band like that to be hitmakers these days. That's one definition of "underrated," I guess.

But I'd think you'd be interested if for no reason other that the Brian Jonestown Massacre connection.

You know, the B-52s were obviously pretty darn successful commercially speaking, and critics liked them for the most part. But I would classify them as underrated from a public perception standpoint. The kitsch factor and a couple of huge novelty hits obscured the fact that they were/are a great band, for most people.

I love Nick Drake.

The absolutely remarkable thing about Pink Moon is that it has no age. You can't date it. It's a beautiful little work.

Dude, I agree. I was gonna post a cult link at some point. I think they just confused a lot of people. What are these guys? Post-punk? Goth? Some sort of super-harsh New Wave? Metal that's nearly danceable? Also, like a lot of bands I'd consider "underrated," they had biggest commercial success with stuff that was IMO inferior to their earlier work.

Underrated is an odd description in a way. By underrated, do we mean never got their due from the press? Did they never attain the popularity that they should have? Is it combined? Interesting to ponder...

I'd say you got your definition of underrated down. Having said that, over half the bands in this thread should not be here.;)

I'm defining it several different ways.

Commercial success not equal to quality of output. In the past this would be someone like Nick Drake, but these days it's just about any really good indie, alt-country, or off-the-beaten-path hip hop artist that doesn't fit the mold corporate radio is looking for.
Well-known by the public, but for a song or two that is/are really not indicative of their overall body of work. The B-52s would fall into this category, or even a band like the Flaming Lips (though they are less well known to the public, She Don't Use Jelly is well konwn).
Not remembered/appreciated in hindsight as much as (sometimes less talented) contemporaries.I've applied these (sometimes mutually exclusive) criteria to pretty much every band I've thrown out there. So some of them might appear contradictory at first blush, but if you consider that there might be different types of "underrated," they make sense.

Absolutely.

In a similar vein--Jimmie Vaughn, Derek Trucks, Freddie King, Cleo Lane (bit of a stretch), Bukka White, Ry Cooder (specifically with Rising Sons).

Others: I reiterate my Butthole Surfers assertion--Locust Abortion Technician is one hell of an album, but they're usually only recognized for crappy "Pepper" (this also fits Big Red Jed's criteria); Stickmen With Rayguns, Operation Ivy, Faure, the Sons of the Pioneers, Ray Wylie Hubbard, I second Screaming Trees, Blood Sweat and Tears (another stretch), and The Flying Burrito Brothers (esp. with Graham Parsons).

I like supergrass, but listen to the first part of the first song (Richard III) and Sonic Youth's Silver Rocket off of Daydream Nation. They are eerily similar; never noticed that before.

I'll 2nd Catherine Wheel. Hell of a band.

Here's a couple more I think are underrated.
Matchbox Twenty: They had a couple of albums that were top to bottom fantastic, not a bad song in the bunch.
Cast: British band that never hit it big here but I like them none the less.
Cowboy Mouth: If you ever get a chance to see them live, go. They're just a good old fashion have a good time doing what you're doing band with some pretty catchy tunes.
Mazzy Star: Love the voice. She ain't bad to look at either.
The Jayhawks: Love their sound.
Veruca Salt: Only really had one good album, but that one kicked ***.
Blur: Give me a break, I like the Brit-Pop stuff ok.

i like what Blur i've heard

i take a lot of issue with Matchbox 20, did you not listen to radio in the late 90's? :)

i think i've heard enough 3AM or Rainmaker or a few other tunes that i could never hear Rob Thomas's voice again and be perfectly happy

i like Veruca Salt, they got a lot of airtime though

Nice. I saw the Lemonheads and Archers of Loaf circa '93 or '94 in a cool/ghetto little sheltered venue in Bricktown, fronting what would now be the Bricktown Canal. Today the area is a scooped out, empty field on corner where the canal turns south just opposite Mickey Mantles, and across the street from the Ballpark. Back then it was just some shell of a building (at street level -- the empty field is now at the basement or canal level of the buildings), and had a few really cool outdoor shows.

or Big Star. They released 3 of the most seminal records of the early-mid 70s...but were just horribly mismanaged. Essential stuff.

Props to King Crimson for earlier mention of Squirrel Bait...Scratch Acid and The Feelies. Maybe this stuff is obscure to some...but me (and many others) were all over this back in our college days.

For more recent stuff...I'd go with anything Mark Kozelek/Sun Kil Moon related. I think the man is a genius.

Matchbox 20 underrated? I like them and have all of their CD's but I think not, they were just everywhere in the late 90's.

One group that I know got a lot of play in OKC but I always felt was a bit under appreciated elsewhere was The Nixon's. They were great every time that I saw them, which was often in OKC.

Back right after they switched the band name from Is That an Animal, when they were doing Hoyt Axton covers and before they decided on which band they wanted to ape, yes.

Wait. They never actually decided exactly which band they wanted to ape. They just lunged at whichever way the wind was blowing that year. I almost forgot.

Just because a band has 3-4 songs that get constant radio air play, it doesn't mean they aren't underrated. MB20 had quite a few good songs, but most people only know the 2-3 that were in heavy rotation.

your preaching to the choir here Chaz. #1 Record and Radio City are about my fave records ever....and have been for about 20 years since i first bought the vinyl re-releases of them that came out in the late 80's. i bought an import copy about that same time of 3rd/Sister Lover's in Dallas for like 20$ i think. good times. i still have those.
