I have no idea. I was assuming that it is related to the Golden Compass (His Dark Materials) books written by Philip Pullman, which is reported an anti-Christian answer to the CS Lewis Chronicles of Narnia books.

Thank God I finally finished reading that a couple of weeks ago.

In a related note, I finished "Gods Behaving Badly" by Marie Phillips yesterday. That was easier to read and funnier.
