Too bad we won't have the Oklahoma SuperSonic Cheeseburgers. I could already see our uniforms. Blue Polos with the Sonic logo, Black shorts, and they could have come out on roller skates.

What could have been

No ****!

During a breakfast meeting for team sponsors Friday in Santa Monica, Calif., team owner Clay Bennett said he wants to negotiate a settlement in which he will take the team's players and coaches, but leave the team's name, colors and 41-year history behind for another franchise to adopt, The Seattle Times reported.

I gathered that much, I was just waxing poetically of what could have been, give me a ****ing break man:P

Uh, rus, they really are planning on leaving the team name there. It is part of a financial negotiation. It is a carrot/stick that is being used to get Seattle to play ball. Basically, they have really, really ****ed off Stern and the NBA. Seattle has two choices right now:

Force the court issue, and potentially force the Sonics owners to stay in Seattle until the end of their lease. This will ensure a number of things, none of which are good for Seattle, except for giving them the ability to be obstructionist, which they have excelled at so far. If they see the court case through, the OKC owners will play out the lease, putting a crappy product on the floor, and both Seattle and the owners will drown in debt. The owners are prepared to do this, if necessary. At the end of the lease the owners will bring the Sonics name and the team itself to OKC, and Seattle will probably never have another NBA team, at least as long as Stern is commish. Or...
Take a lump sum lease buyout from the OKC owners (probably around $30 million, which is about what the team has lost annually the past few years, anyway), the team name, and potentially get back into David Stern's graces enough to get a team again one day, expansion or otherwise. They will have to build a new building before getting a new team, BTW.If Seattle has any amount of sense whatsoever, they will choose option two, and the team will come here this fall. Of course, they have shown poor judgment throughout the entire ordeal, so who knows?

Also, the team will almost certainly NOT be called the Thunderbirds, according to some folks I've talked to who probably know what they're talking about. One of the names I heard tossed around today is the Oklahoma City Energy. It's growing on me.

LMFAO That’s goddamn hilarious. Seriously, how do you follow that? My hat’s off to you sir, *dead rabbits falling out* Captain Wigglenose?

He has a point man. We all know that KC's football and baseball teams are meaningless, what you guys really want is another NBA team. Well keep dreaming brother, the Sonics are ours and the Kings are never coming back!

Put that in your pipe, along with all the other stuff KC has that Oklahoma doesn't, and smoke it.

Oh yeah, "Oklahoma City Obesities"

I guess that means the 66ers won't be the OKC team's d-league affiliate. They would probably make it the Iowa Energy (http://www.nba.com/dleague/iowa/) for name synergy and the like.

Nichols Hills, Gaillardia, Oak Tree, Heritage Hills, or Crown Heights for starters.

Byron Scott prefered the Edmond/N. OKC area and still owns two houses. Here's his main house that's in the general vicinity of Frontier City.

The NBA isn't too keen on 'number names', even though I like 89ers. Just look at the Philadelphia 76ers, their new logo/unis have a bland 'Sixers' on them.

I still think the OKC Rush has more to work with than OKC Energy.

the rest of these are offered in jest

Oklahoma Scissortails would be cool, but no one outside of Oklahoma would get it and the players would be made fun of.

Oklahoma Crystals (paying homage to our prominance in methamphetimene production and national leadership in incarcerating women as a result thereof)

Oklahoma Doublewides

Oklahoma Gamblers...hey, we got more casinos per capita than any state except for Nevada.

Oklahoma Gas. We're number two in natural gas production, and natural gas smells like number two after they add that stinky stuff at the pipeline that makes it possible for people to detect leaks.

So no state money was or will be used to induce a team here? No tax abatements, etc.?

Look, I'm not a roundball fan myself, and I really don't have a dog in the fight anyway, but teams wouldn't be named the Colorado Rockies, the Florida Marlins, the New England Patriots, the Minnesota Vikings, or the Texas Rangers, etc. if it did'nt broaden appeal and thus help the team and the city that earns sales taxes and what not on receipts.

The legislature will be also working on ways to extend the Quality Jobs Program to the OKC NBA team. Thanks Oklahoma, but still, a drop in the bucket, people. Plus, I will guarantee you pretty much every major league team enjoys some state incentives, somehow.

Listen, I love the state of Oklahoma as much as anybody here, I'll wager, but Oklahoma City has spent the past 15 years and a billion and a half dollars to get to this point. Not to mention the fact that OKC has had to put a hold on some of its own improvements due to the State not delivering on financial promises (example: the Native American Cultural Center) and had to pick up the Lion's share of the statewide Centennial celebration due to lack of promised participation from the State and lack of participation from other cities.

We specifically need and deserve to enjoy the benefit of an improved national exposure and respect based upon our own efforts. If the team is named "Oklahoma _________ " I will guarantee you half the people in America would assume the team was based in Tulsa. Hey, you guys made it--you're a "major league city" now. Unpucker the butthole a bit, would you? IMO, the hand wringing over all this is purely childish, a tantrum over a chest thump that just isn't quite satisfying enough.

You don't lose a thing if the team isn't called OKC, and Tulsa doesn't gain a thing. I'm sure no one has forgotten the treatment our fair city has received on Friends, and in a commercial or two lately. No way anyone with half a brain assumes that an Oklahoma NBA team is based here.

As a Tulsan, I know that Oklahoma City having this team is a good thing for the whole state. I know that even if we had the economic infrastructure in place to support a team, we still wouldn't do it, unless the team went undefeated every year. That's just not how we roll.

I will tell you that, having listened to the whole fit that was thrown over the Hornets leaving, and hearing all the indignance and uppity attitude from so many, it makes it a bit tough to pull for this thing, despite the vast preponderance of logical evidence to do so.

A shred of humility in the wake of such a tremendous victory can't possibly hurt.

Anyhoo, I just think people around the state are more inclined to get behind the team if its named for the whole state vice a particular city. For that matter, the kid in Stroud, Gage, Jay, Waurika or Durant will be able to say, "hey, that's my team," and not just the kids in OKC. A shred of humility in the wake of such a tremendous victory can't possibly hurt.
First off, we're a major league city to two groups of people at this point. A substantial number of Oklahoma City residents (though not all) and apparently the NBA Board of Governors. Outside of the city limits of OKC and the offices of a few select NBA personnel, we are FAR from a major league city, perception-wise. This will help rectify that, and is the fruit of lots and lots of hard work by hundreds of people over the past 15 years, plus hundreds of millions in OKC taxpayer dollars.

Second, if we "don't lose a thing" if "OKC" isn't in the name, why are you (and anybody else) suddenly so concerned that it has only Oklahoma in the name? You can't have it both ways.

Third, I'm not sure what you're talking about when you talk about "the fit that was thrown" over the Hornets leaving. I heard precious few people throw fits over that. It was sortof spelled out all along. Don't get me wrong; I and many others would have been plenty happy if it would have worked out for them to stay (I'd still prefer them -- with OKC ownership -- to the Sonics), but I'll GUARANTEE you I never threw a fit over their leaving.

I hope you do decide to pull for the team, but if not, oh well. OKC is doing a pretty good job of pulling its own weight these days, thanks. And BTW, a Tulsan lecturing OKC on "humility" and "uppity attitude" is pretty laughable.

BigRedJed

You're working from the assumption that bringing a team here has dick to do with bringing more sales taxes into the coffers on game nights. Certainly, those are compelling benefits for having a team here, but this is 90+% about marketing Oklahoma City to the world. Is, and always has been. Therefore, removing "City" from the name is directly counter to the intent of the aforementioned work and investment.

It's about marketing/public relations and quality of life, and getting extra sales tax dollars in the general fund is just a nice byproduct.

Nope, I'm not saying it's fail, just that it's LESS WIN for the people who put in the time, tax dollars, work and private dollars to get the city to this point. Listen, I understand the point of everybody who is arguing for taking "City" out of the name, I just believe (selfishly) that the city who came together over the past 15 years to make this possible, with little or no help from the outside world mind you, deserves UNIQUE recognition for it. If it doesn't say "City" in the name it dilutes the effectiveness of the statement. This is 100% about what Oklahoma City has done to pull itself up by its bootstraps; sorry.

This is not an OKC vs. Tulsa thing, although people seem to be trying to make it that. Once again, this is about putting OKC on the map. That was the point of MAPS, passed 15 years ago in a city nobody (including the citizens of said city) believed in. That was the point of Finsh MAPS Right, the campaign that extended the original MAPS tax and allowed the arena to be built, and of the recent tax passed to fund Ford Center improvements. This city has been a backwater for many, many years. Maybe people from outside OKC (and even quite a few inside) don't understand the effort made by many in this community to change that. Sorry, it's OUR coming out party.

Now, does that mean that it excludes people from elsewhere, or that they can't have pride in said team? Heck no. I grew up a Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys fan. Loved those teams, though I had no real connection. They were close, and they meant something to me.

I also as an Oklahoman am extremely proud of the things Tulsa (and other cities) have to offer. I am very proud of Cain's ballroom, and go to lots of shows there, but I have no illusions that Tulsa should not get the credit for being home to said cultural treasure. I love visiting Philbrook, and do it often. I have some great photos in my collection of TULSA's Boston Avenue Church.

You don't know what I do for a living, but much of it involves encouraging people to visit the great touchstones that this state offers. Including, for instance, BARTLESVILLE'S Price Tower and Woolaroc. And you can be damn sure Bartlesville appreciates me using their name when I tell people about those places. "Oklahoma's" Blue Whale? Catoosa says "thanks but no thanks." The Round Barn on Route 66 in "Oklahoma County?" Arcadia begs to differ.

My point is, it won't kill you people for OKC to have one cool thing to hang our hats on nationally. You have plenty of cool things, be satisfied with that. And pass one of those dang sales tax initiatives you people keep voting down so that one day we can have an NBA turnpike rivalry.

Do non-OKCitans feel a connection with the Oklahoma RedHawks that they didn't have with the Oklahoma City 89ers?

Do more people come from across the state to see the RedHawks because it has the more inclusive Oklahoma name?

BigRedJed
3/28/2008, 07:44 PM
It hacked a lot of people off, though you might be surprised that it did not hack ME off. The difference is that the Redhawks don't significantly raise Oklahoma City's profile on a national level.
I seriously doubt it.

BigRedJed
3/28/2008, 07:50 PM
By the way, I also seriously doubt that more people will come to NBA games with "city" left out of the name, and if they do for that reason alone, they're silly. They're either going to be interested in the NBA and identify with the closest team geographically, or they won't. A crapload of the fans who go to Dallas-area major league sports are from Oklahoma. And you're talking about crossing state lines into a state many Oklahomans view with bitterness and rivalry, for whatever reason. I doubt more people from here would go to Mavericks games if they were the "Southcentral U.S." Mavericks.

I think that a number of the people suggesting "city" should be left out of the name are doing it out of envy.

I'll leave Homey out of that group; he's consistently a promoter of all things Oklahoma and I think he's just more interested in state bragging rights than community bragging rights.

I love this red dirt my ancestors chose to scratch out a living in and it bothers me to see my Okie bretheren carping over something as insignificant as whether some d00ds from far away who get paid to play a child's game are named for OUr capitol city or OUr homeland in general. I'd rather it be my Homeland, not just a great American city.

Good.

But let me tell you a story to illustrate MY sentiments. A good friend of mine came from a pretty poor upbringing. He and his family lived on the poor side of town, and back in school he couldn't afford nice clothes, and everybody laughed at him. The girls didn't even know he was alive.

So he went to college, studied real hard and started his own business. He was really, really good at it. He worked some long hours, saved hard, and what do you know? One day he was rich. So, he bought a nice house. And a Porsche.

Well, lucky me. Why, you ask? Because he was my friend. Now, I'm not going to deny that I have a little game of my own. I don't need a Porsche to get girls. I dress nice. People I respect often recognize me in public and say hi. But I'll also say this: when he and I both went out in his Porsche, it was GAME ON. I always seemed to do better for being around him (and his Porsche, strangely enough). And I hope he did better for having me there with him.

I loved that Porsche. Sometimes he let me drive it (with him in the car). When I thought about it, every once in a while I put gas in the tank to thank him for driving me around in it. Bought him beers.

But I never made a single payment on that car. Nor did I ever tell any girls that it was my Porsche. Or "ours." Never did I ask him to put my name on the vanity plate.

I was always happy to go get girls with him and that car. But brother, I knew whose ****ing Porsche that was.

ok, so OKC is the nerd from high school, the OKC Whatevers are the Porsche and Tulsa is the lamo that gets poon by acting like the OKC Whatevers are his Porsche too?

I think MAPS was about bringing OKC up as a city in Oklahoma. It was about getting dudes from Harrah, Purcell, Piedmont, etc to come downtown and do stuff when going out. After it got cool, it was something for people who happened to be coming to Oklahoma City something neat to do.

But the NBA team, I think, will be more about making Oklahoma as a whole not look so podunk. For example, when you think of the Portland Trailblazers do you think Portland or Oregon as a whole?

After the team can (hopefully) help get rid of the trailer park image that Oklahoma as a state has then we can work on the coolness of each city. It needs to be an us/us thing instead of an us/them (OKC/Tulsa) thing. What's good for one is good for the other, nationally.

Cain's sure does have a lot of shows I'd like to see, though. :D

Portland doesn't need an NBA team to be hella cool...

Message boards have more of an impact than people think. It's like a free survey for those in charge. They are used to gauge public opinion. I promiss you that members of the OU Athletic Department frequent this site to get a feel for how the fans are reacting to things.

I'm going to be a fan either way, but since OKC is doing alomst all of the heavy lifting on this, the team should be the "OKC _______"

I would be livid if they dropped off the "City" Part.

If the name of the team was "Oklahoma City Thunder" do you think people outside of oklahoma would know what City and state the team is in? The answer is yes.

If the name of the team was "Oklahoma Thunder" do you think people outside of oklahoma would know what City and state the team is in? The answer is a Yes for the state but a probably not for the city. (Unless they are NBA fans)

so, when will we know what they decide to do regarding naming? Any estimates floating around?

BigRedJed
3/30/2008, 10:28 AM
It will be sometime after the court case is either settled or after the OKC owners win, if they win. The trial is in June. There is a distinct possiblity a settlement will be reached before then, based on recent events. The settlement would likely leave the Sonics name in Seattle, at which point a new name would be required. There would possibly be a public charade at "voting" on the name at that point.

If Seattle persists in the court case and is "victorious" (meaning they manage to keep the team there two more seasons out of pure spite), the renaming may not happen at all, or at least there would be a much less critical timetable on the renaming, since the owners would retain the Supersonics name legally and would not leave it in Seattle. If this happens there is a distinct chance that they will take the Sonics name with the team and then rename them here, thus ensuring there would never be another "Seattle Supersonics" team, and giving a big **** you to Seattle.

So to answer your question, there are still too many balls in the air to tell you the team will be renamed by _________ day.

bri
3/30/2008, 10:34 AM
I see.

Well, just let me know when the jerseys are in stock at local retail outlets. :D

If their version is called spite, what is the Oklahoma City (hopefully not Oklahoma) version called?

:D

bri

Civic growth. ;)

BigRedJed
3/30/2008, 11:44 AM
I say spite only because from the NBA and owner perspective, it's strictly a matter of "when," not "if." The only things Seattle gains from keeping the team there for two years at this point are two seasons of a lame-duck team phoning it in, an empty arena, tens of millions of dollars in more debt, eternal damnation from David Stern, and the satisfaction derived from bleeding the owner group of tens of millions of cash for a couple of years (with very little of said cash benefitting Seattle).

If they settle, they gain tens of millions in cash payment from the owners, retain the name Supersonics, and earn a little reprieve from David Stern's wrath. They also would stand a much stronger chance of one day soon having a team again, probably named the Seattle Supersonics.

If they persist in their court case, I'm not sure I could think of a more clear example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I'm not sure how you could characterize what OKC and the owners have done as "spiteful" in any way. If you think it was done with bad intentions (it wasn't), you could call it predatory. But "spiteful," no. "Spiteful" will be what Clay and Co. do if they are forced to stay for two seasons and upon moving choose to take the Supersonics name and team records with them (on paper), and rename the team once they get here. THAT would be spiteful. And deserved.

bri
3/30/2008, 11:47 AM
Dude, if they have to wait the two years then they should keep the Sonics name. 'Cause you people can't pick names for sh*t. :D

BigRedJed
3/30/2008, 11:50 AM
Oh, we can pick 'em. It's just that T-town has such a wealth of minor league and failed major league teams in its history that all of the good ones for this region are used up. :D
