We have the longest winning streak in football, but we all know that it should have been at least 49 - the game before it started and the game it ended

Because the girls need serious good vibes sent their way for this night, here are some graphics I made back when I had free time:
Danielle Robinson needs to have a career night... 20 points at least...
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/4943/drobvw7.jpg
When our starting 5 is in foul trouble, we'll have to rely on the likes of #4...
http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/7673/abizc5.jpg
"Trinity" will need to make Neo go "Whoa" ...

And when we need a lightning-fast pass to finish the Domers off, here she comes to save the day...

The same thing as Purdue getting to play two games on their home court as a #9 seed? The wimmin's tourney remains a joke.

I've been saying the "d" word a lot during the first four minutes of the game. To minimize cursing, here is a game we can all play from home:

Add "O" to anything Irish related.

The red haired scary girl is O'Schroeder.

They just hit an O'Three.

O'Shiit. An O'Three. O'No. :(

Yay, Amanda Thompson.

O'Shiit. I'm going to the O'Fridge for an O'Beer.

Jenna's 2-for-2 from three so far.

ND gets a bukkit, OU gets called for three seconds in the lane and we have a timeout. 11-10, ND.

Update: still down by 5. Courtney is finally getting aggressive on the post. However, the refs will not call anything against the "home team" but will readily call cheap O'Shiit against us. As such, ND is 4 for 4 from the three point line.

My O'Beer is almost gone, thanks to the 32-24 deficit and the lucky 13 turnovers so far. I only hope things get turned around, or at least Coale does the Calvin Simpson halftime speech... go ahead, ask what it is if you don't know :D

OKC-SLC
3/25/2008, 09:23 PM
ok, i'll bite.

what is the calvin halftime speech?

badger
3/25/2008, 09:27 PM
38-34 at the half.

What needs to change:
On offense:
MUST take open shots when available
MUST not turn over the ball with long passes that are easily picked off
MUST take open three's when available
SHOULD use post options more, rather than pass options

On defense:
MUST guard the three more closely
MUST effectively switch when they illegally screen on the top of the key
SHOULD be softer to prevent ref screwjobs present in first half

We are only down by 4, much better than the 8-12 deficits of earlier. We can pull this game off with these adjustments. We would be down by more if not for the shooting of Jenna and Amanda, so good on them. Go team! :D

EDIT: The KS halftime speech was one of the years we won the Big 12 tourney. We were down severely to Mizzou at the half. KS allegedly walked into the lockerroom, threw a chair at the chalkboard and walked out. We went on to win the game and the tourney :D

I feel a lot better after we made a mini-run to close the gap. We played good to start the half and to end it, but in the middle it looked an awful lot like the past couple of months with this team. 56-49 wik 7:30 to go.

notes:
-Domer scary girl and Amanda have four fouls... but are still in.
-CP3 has 20 and 12. Yeah, that's another double-double.
- Amanda has perfected the mid range jumper... which should be like 2.5 points, because it is so close to 3 :D
- Nyesha can shoot, but needs to minimize the turnovers, kplzthx
- Jenna quieted down on shooting from the first half, but has upped the stealing, blocking and passing.

All added together, we have a seven point lead on a moderately hostile location (seriously, there are a lot of empty seats. something tells me their football season soured a lot of fans, hehe)

Unfortunately this OU women's team does not protect the ball or pass the ball well enough to truly be a national title contender at this point. If they can't find a way to cut their turnovers by 6-10 a game, the 2009 season will be more of the same, I'm afraid.

it is 100% poor execution imo. incredibly foolish passes and individual turnovers against pressure are crippling. but damn, we sure look like we drill it as efficiently as we do those things.

Yeah, if I was either Capel OR Coale, I'd make valuing each possession a priority in practice. Run the 5-on-7 fullcourt press drill, and once they've gotten to where they can consistently break the press when the defense has two extra players, keep adding more. And I'd make my guards run suicides for every time they dribbled into a "dead spot" against the press and then picked up the dribble, trapping themselves. Every lazy skip or lob pass, regardless of whether or not the defense picks it off gets more suicides. Not being smart with the ball would result in running until you puke, and then running one more for puking.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, turnovers and not being smart with the ball annoys me. :D

She is one of the most dominant post players in NCAA History, not only does she have nearly 100 straight double doubles, she is a 3 time all-american, Natl POY, 2 time Big 12 poy and Dpoy, 3 time all-conf, will own every school record when she graduates and several ncaa and big 12 records. For her career she is averaging over 20 points and 15 rebounds.

If we had better gaurds she would probably avg 30 and 15. Id say she is by far and away one of the best girls bball players in ncaa history

Boom, right there. What you just said.

I'm not saying Courtney isn't a great post player, but I need to see more from her than just getting her dozen points and boards per game. Her field goal and free throw percentages could be better. It's too easy to take her out of the game, which doesn't speak well for any "greatest of all time" status.

I hope everyone, Courtney included, works hard in the offseason and comes back in '08-'09 better than they are right now. They have to, if this program wants to return to the upper level status we were at a few years ago.

20 and 15 isnt 12 and 12...also, her career fg % is right at 60%, that is pretty darn good! She is doing all this with avg gaurd play, that shows how great she is. If she had the really good gaurds she could be unstoppable

It would be a real shame if a team that landed Courtney and Ashley Paris went all 4 years without even making a final four, which is a very real possibility here. When we found out they were coming to Norman, I was thinking at the very least TWO final fours with maybe a championship or two. What a disappointment so far.

This team has....had no discipline whatsoever and plays YMCA-style ball with no consequences. The fact that plumley can throw the ball up for grabs, then gamble for a steal and give up a layup the other way and never look remotely concerned about getting benched bothers me.

Wow, that game was tough to watch. The turnovers absolutely kill us. It is amazing to see just about every team slice through the lane and get layups against us, yet we never can do this. Why isn't Robinson doing this more? Why on Earth did AP take a 3 at the end of that game?

If they struggle for a few games, then that's one thing. If they struggle every freaking game of the year, then perhaps you're asking them to do the wrong thing.

It is up to fans to make excuses why their school is the greatest, when in fact no school is the greatest in everything. It is up to the team to make decisions on how to become the greatest.

Therefore, I don't want to hear any ref whining from Coale and Co., nor do I want to hear about how great this season was. We were ranked off past reputation and recruiting classes, not from outstanding wins and such. We had more turnovers than probably half the teams out there. Our top players didn't improve, they actually seemed to hitting sophomore slumps all at the same time, regardless of what year they actually were.

All of this is frustrating to watch, because they're not connecting on passes and plays they used to when they were younger and less experienced. Therefore, I assign the following grades:

Courtney Paris: C. Not because you're an average player, but because you had an average year considering your potential. What happened to your usual rebound-then-basket heroics? Hope you found the answer in your diary that they kept mentioning...

Amanda Thompson: A-. We need a mid-range game and you answered the call. You are one of the few that does not repeatedly turn over the ball or force shots when they're not open (unlike last season). Work on creating more of your own shots next year.

Jenna Plumley: C-. What happens when perfect passes become perfect turnovers? You were on the bench some last year because you were a freshman. You were on the bench some this year for turnovers alone. You get a higher grade for your 3's, but that won't fly next year. If all you can do is shoot three's, you're going to become Steve Kerr... while Kerr had his rings, he had hardly any playing time, and I'm sure you'd much rather be Jordan than Kerr.

Ashley Paris: B. I know, it looks like I'm saying she's better than AP Player of the Year sister, but it almost looks that way. Double team CP3 or move her farther away than 3 ft from the basket, and CP3 would become 3P0 ("We're doomed."). AP5 has a mid-range shot, can rebound-then-basket like her sister and has developed more as a player this year. Kudos, now work on becoming more aggressive on rebounding and pounding close shots off the backboard in.

Danielle Robinson: C-. You added much-needed speed from last year's Ole Miss embarrassment. However, you need to add more to stay in the starting five. You, like your other guard counterpart, are turnover prone, but without the 3 threat. You have speed down, now work on ball handling and shooting, or your starting spot might be in jeopardy.

Coach Coale: D-. I won't fail you because the beginning of the season was pretty good. Keep the players motivated down the stretch, work on slowing down the game if that is what it takes to keep the girls from lobbing the ball away. So much potential and so little results leads to ultimate frustration. Hopefully, this will not only motivate the team but also you for next year, the last year of Paris & Paris. Make Oklahoma proud.

Defense. This team couldn't keep my grandmother from scoring. They've let opposing guards run roughshod over them the whole year and it's come back to bite them in the *** several times. This team needs to learn to defend.

The spacing is terrible on offense and the players act like they don't know what they're doing out there half the time on offense or defense. In fact, it looks like some players are trying to play a different game than the others at times out there.

That's all coaching. Yes, the players have to execute the gameplan but when a team plays as undisciplined and sloppy as this team does -- at the end of the year no less -- that falls on the coaching staff.

No doubt, Sherri has done a great job with the program and has had great success in the past. I'm not one of those people that will sit here and act like I know more about it than she does. But I know enough about the game to recognize players that have no clue. And that's what I see out there. So either the coaches have failed them or they don't give a flying flip about what the coaches are trying to teach them.

Don't know where you start to fix it, but there isn't going to be any Final Fours unless there's more disciplined play.

It also should tell you something when your star player gets their numbers every game but you're still losing.

I hope they do work on things and get the ship righted, because there's so much talent here it would be great to see the team succeed.

Why on Earth did AP take a 3 at the end of that game?

Because the shot clock was down to 3 after being unable to call/execute a play to get a shooter open. I don't see how CP can be double and triple teamed, yet nobody is open on the perimeter. However, lazy defense cost them this game after blowing the 9 point lead late in the second half.

Watched the last bit of the game last night, not too closely maybe because we're almost painful to watch sometimes, but I couldn't help but notice that we were running the most basic double post high school/junior high offense that you can imagine. Two post players stationed on the blocks (surrounded by ND defenders I might add) and three guards around the perimiter playing catch, and I say playing catch because with the exception of Plumley there's not a one of them with a decent chance of making a shot from out there. It struck me at the time that here we are supposed to be a big time womens college basketball team and we're running the offense that was taught to me in 7th grade (and that was a real long time ago).

On the other hand I watched UCONN play and they are executing some slick looking stuff. Granted their overall talent level is considerably higher, but it was a glaring contrast.

I think we run a very simple offense because when we try to do anything more, we screw up. I have no idea how to fix this team, and from the looks that Sherri was giving on the sidelines, I don't think she does either.

Recruiting some guards that can shoot and/or handle the ball (both would be great) would be a good place to start. ;)

At times the girls look wonderful. Take for instance the play that tied the game up in regulation and sent it into OT. Jenna's pass inside to CP3 was great with only 2 seconds left to shoot and Courtney hit an easy layup because of it.

Unfortunately that seems to be an every other play kind of thing. The other half of the wimmens game look like a BAD highschool team. I just can't stand to watch that and have been tuned out for most of this season just praying that they would win but not watching the games. That is sad I admit, but being a fan of the game of basketball (it's my favorite sport) it is hard to stomach your team butchering the game.

Dead Sooner program's song after defeat:

Coale: This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: huge success.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Offensive playbook.
We do what we can because we must.
For the good of passing balls
Except the ones turned over.

(Chorus 1)
But there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying with bad shots you must take
And the season gets done and you have lots of fun
With the teams who are still alive.

I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though we broke no presses and defeated me.
And tore us to pieces.
And threw every 3 in that there hoop.
And as they swished it hurt because
They were chanting for "O-U."

(Chorus 2)
Now these points off TO's give us hints so sublime
That we're out of patience so turnover all the time.
So I'm glad possessions turned think of all the things we learned
About the teams who are still alive

Go ahead and grieve us.
I think we blew our chance last night.
Maybe you'll find someone else to cheer for.
Maybe O-S-U?
That was a joke. Haha. Fat chance.
Anyway, that game was great
It's so frustrating and done.

(Chorus 3)
Look at me still talking with recruiting to do.
When I look out there it makes me glad I'm O-U.
I've strange playbooks to be run there is research to be done
On the teams who are still alive

And believe me we'll be still alive.
We'll do better and be still alive.
Our play's fantastic and we'll be still alive.
While they're dying we'll be still alive.
And when they're dead we will be still alive.

Still alive
Still alive

lol. actually, he has four options, as per the code of RPG ethics and crap. They are:

ATTACK
MAGIC
ITEM
RUN

He has already chosen to "attack" through the evil hate speech of calling me a "nerd." However, because he has +10 height and +10 strength on me, he has at least one turn before I cast the MAGIC spell of "sleep" while he is on the couch. So, here are his options:

1- ATTACK again - all he has to do is say anything negative about Brett Favre and he is doomed.
2- MAGIC - I must admit, his "cooking" spell is very effective.
3- ITEM - Men out there take note: Flowers, jewelry, candy. Rinse and repeat.
4- RUN - Probably his best option at this point.

Ooh, on second thought, I'll summon a Lesser Cat to distract her. Wait, isn't this a basketball forum?

Your hesitations with all your "second thought"-ing and "wait"-ing has caused you to lose your turn.

Since this is a basketball forum, the RPG system of ethics is no longer allowing any actions that do not relate to basketball... which means I have a shot clock of 35 seconds... nay... TURNS... to get this right.

Turn 1 - ATTACK with Coale's evil glare.
Turn 2 - ATTACK with turnover prone laser pass.
Turn 3 - ITEM - Yellow Shirt Gestapo's yellow shirt. +10 authority, +10 dickwaddedness
Turn 4 - SUMMON - bench scoring sibling of Ben Roethlesberger! +10 celebrity status
Turn 5 - ATTACK with celebrity status! It's super ineffective :(
Turn 6 - MAGIC - Sooner Magic! Sooner Magic! +10 points
Turn 7-30: ATTACK with weak offensive playbook. -25 points
Turn 31 - MAGIC - Sooner Magic! Sooner Magic! Super effective for +10 points.
Turn 32 - ATTACK with foul prone hands. Party member STEVENSON has fainted/fouled out.
Turn 33 - ATTACK with turnover prone laser pass. Party members PLUMLEY and ROBINSON fainted/benched.
Turn 34 - ITEM - Sherri Coale's incredibly high heels! +10 intimidation, +10 fear of running laps and win sprints
Turn 35 - RUN!
