According to ESPN, we f'in billhillies are gonna hafta come up with an NBA team name (Report: Sonics willing to leave name, history behind (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3310713))

So where do we go from here? Let's get the obvious out of the way:

Ad Age ran a story on this a few days ago, and was pretty typical of the coastal mentality and no sense of history or background. http://adage.com/article?article_id=125849 (their site is down for maintenance at the moment, however)

Here's the thing, even with the Sonic Drive-Ins aside, OKC is more deserving of the name than Seattle, and here's why:

Seattle named their team because Boeing got the SST contract. But the SST was scrapped and never got off the ground. Why? Well in part due to the results of Operation Bongo II, where OKC was subjected to 400+ sonic booms over a 6 month period. Meanwhile, OKC has plenty of planes out at Tinker capable of Mach 1.

But the name is just a bargaining chip at this point, a bone to toss in return for Bennett being allowed to move the team.

Yeesh... the idiocy of the comments on there is bordering on obscene. No hoops history in this state? Ever heard of the Phillips 66ers? They were better than most NBA teams in the 1950s, and were actually offered NBA membership at one point (the idea that Bartlesville could have been in the NBA in 1953 is an interesting one, but the 66ers paid better than most NBA teams). Ever heard of Hank Iba)? Ever heard of Abe Lemons? Marques Haynes? Alvin Adams? Wayman Tisdale? Bob Kurland? Cripes I'm leaving lots of people out, but the point is the ignorance of other never surprises me.

Or maybe we should hack off Duke and the Utah Jazz and call them the Blue Devils.

That's a name that's been floated with other efforts, such as the CBA team that became the Cavalry, IIRC.

It's not, however, a name that lends itself easily to marketable imagery. Boomers does (I'm thinking a cannon), but I think OU would get upset with the name, not that they have any right to it.

Which reminds me, Bennett better have the name already picked out and the trademark filed, or someone's going to squat a bunch of names and make a pest of themselves. Similarly, checking trademark records is a good way to see what a team is up to, though many have gotten smart and put out dummy filings. The Houston Texans did - they had a lot of us thinking the team would be the Toros.

Bombers ala Midwest City; although my first choice would be The Okie Terror. The Ford Center could be renamed the Terror Dome. Public Enemy could perform opening night & also plug their new movie, Welcome to the Terror Dome.

I thought about this one too, but with the Memorial only blocks away, probably not a good choice. It is sad too because I really liked the idea of a fierce bomber coming out of a basketball or something. Too many people wouldn't get it though and think about the wrong reason.

Stampede sounds so... WNBA... Like "Flash" or "Shock". I still say "Dirt Burglars" is the best we can do. :D

Seriously, I'm shocked we aren't going something with a Native American feel to it. Something not insulting, either. I originally thought to use the Cherokee word for storm or wind or something. I think that would be good.

Edit: Cherokee for "storm" is apparently "u0w" or "unula" which is pronounced ooh-new-la. Interesting.

Idea: If we lose the lawsuit to Seattle, which simply cannot stand the fact that one of their MANY professional teams would choose OKC over their [ann coulter]godless liberal city[/ann coulter], I choose the OKLAHOMA CITY SUPERSONICS.

Seattle, we've tried being nice about this, we've tried being fair. We just wanted an NBA team, we didn't want to take yours. You had your chance to attend games, support measures that would ensure your team stay in Seattle, but the only thing you have going for you now is a lease that is up in a few years which we can opt out of. Your virtues of chanting "save our sonics," while inspiring to some, is not going to change the fact that your city has forced a professional team, a money-making BUSINESS, to stay in an unfair lease agreement in an aging arena.

But, that's your city's fault, not ours. The current owner just happens to see a winning, money-making area in Oklahoma City, and if you can't accept that OKC, right now, is a better place for the Sonics, then maybe they should keep the name they have now, just out of spite :D

That just conjures up an image of Ralph Nader. Maybe, that's just me. I like Chupacabras or Thunderbirds. Then again, I just don't see the NBA allowing such a name that translates to goat-suckers.

The Boomers is not a bad idea at all.

Not only does it coincide nicely with the obvious land rush reference, making the perfect complement to the biggest team in the city, but it also continues the legacy of the Sonics perfectly. Sonics. = Sonic Boom. = Boomers.

It would also be a perfect way to stick it to Seattle for being *** hats about the name.

Or you could go with the other obvious reference to Thuderstorms, i.e. thunder boomers.

And apparently it's not unprecedented:
