I turned it off when she said, "It was a big black thing, about nine inches long".

But yes I'm glad a rat didn't attack my sack.

What size are you looking for? Is flat-panel essential? I've had no problems with my Toshiba, but I understand why you might be leery of them now. Sonys are great, but you'll pay for them.

I'm not buying another DLP. I've blown out one bulb and now this.

I'd like 46" at least.

^^That one is 42", but I'm a fan of Matsu****a products.

Should be on sale right now under $2000. Only two HDMI inputs, which is a drag, but if you buy a decent receiver you should get HDMI 1.3 switching anyhow.

^^This is the one I've got. The one they're advertising looks to be a refurb.

You've got some great deals out there now, unfortunately they are more in the 2k-2500 price range.

You can find 50" Pioneer PDP5080 For around 2299.00. We are selling the Pioneer Elite Version PDD1150 for 2297.00
The sony XBR's are a great deal now as well. We are selling the KDL46XBR5 for 2497.00

Under 2K I would look for a v or w series sony.ie KDL46V3000 or KDL46W3000
Not much of a Samsung fan

LCD is liquid crystal Display. THey are backlit which makes a huge difference in price. Addtionally, they have been using techniques such as ramping up the pixel count and increasing the refresh rate in order to provide a smoother more color accurate picture. Generaly life expectancy of the technology is around 60k hours. Keep in mind TV's are like any other appliance. Expect 8-12 years of service from any of the major brands whether LCD or Plasma

Plasma displays use plasma gas. Pioneers is the only one I can recommend. a 720p Pioneer will kill just about any 1080p LCD and will still be able to process 1080p video from bluray etc..... Pioneer Plasma can achieve almost total black and thus the only one that can reproduce colors accurately right out of the box. The technology has a half life of 120k hours.

The biggest issue I have between LCD and Plasma is the reflective screen on the plasmas versus the matte screen on an LCD. If you have sunlight in the room it sits, LCD will make a huge difference. The rest (black level, etc.) are minor issues compared to this one IMHO.

Hmmm, 85 why is there no love of Samsung? Just personal preference?
I'm thinking about a 42" here in about a month or so...just thought I would ask.
IIRC, the model I was looking at also has 2 HDMI ports...plenty for me if'n I hook up the PS3 to it.

BTW to the Prior post. Pioneer uses a black striped single pane glass that refracts light instead of reflecting, so reflection is not a problem.

As far as samsung goes. They have great name recognition especially with the younger crowd. They sell a hell of alot of tvs. That said, their panels dollar for dollar do not compete with a Sony of the same specs. Their prices again have to be similar whereas they all make differrent level models.

Samsung has a problem with their colors. They "bloom" the colors to make the tv's seem richer and more colorful than they actually are. Then a dark scene hits and eerything is blacked out and all detail is lost. They are not bad but if I am spending $$ then I will compare the samsung to the equal sony at the base settings. the sony almost everytime wins.
