View Full Version : Calling outdoor patio stone do-it-yourselfers

Here's my idea. My patio is relatively small. So here's what I'm thinking about doing instead of paying to have a larger slab poured.
I found some 16"x16" brick pavers/patio stones at Lowes.
Here's kind of what they look like:
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100598429&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&PID=500871&cm_mmc=CJ-_-nextag-_-D28X-_-100598429&cpncode=12-44262961-2&URL=http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/BuildLinkToHomeDepot?linktype=product&id=100598429&cm_mmc=CJ-_-nextag-_-D28X-_-100598429&AID=10368321&cj=true&srccode=cii_9324560

I'm thinking about going about 2 rows out with those around my patio to enlarge the patio area. I bought one and laid it out there to see what it will look like. It looks nice.
So my question is have any of you ever done this at your homes? If so what's the best way to make it look nice but still keep from hitting my wallet too hard. I was thinking I'd dig the ground up a bit and make sure I level it out..then put weed mat down..then put a layer of sand on top of the weed mat, then lay the stones on top of that. Am I on the right path here with my idea??
Thanks to all for any help/tips.

when you put the sand down you will need to stamp it. My BIL did it a couple of years ago and his is standing up to heavy traffic. He used the actual brick type tho. he got it leveled thru down some sand and stamped it flat. he also misted the sand as he stamped it. After he got the pavers down he put sand on top of the bricks and used a push broom to spread the sand into the cracks.

But it sounds like your on the right track.

Cool, thanks.
These stones I'm getting resemble brick material also and not rock. That's a good idea with the broom to fill the cracks in tight. So what did he use to stamp the sand down. Like a sheet of plywood or something?

I will have to ask him. Seems like it was a small stamp.. say 12" x 12" . but he just tamped the sand firm.

Also, is it 'tamp' or 'stamp'? This is important.

Tamp stamp?

That's a lot of work. If people are going to be walking on it you better go down at least a foot.

That would only be needed if there was a hot chick tanning back there or something...plus I'm too lazy to take a pic and download it on here, haha. Its like an 8 x 8 slab that butts up against my brick wall on the back of the house. The grass is pretty much level around the whole slab....at least level as far out as I'll go with the pavers.

I'm thinking it's mainly going to be the area my grill and patio table will sit. Not a whole lot of heavy traffic

negative.

6 inches is plenty, it's how you use it.

I made a patio area for my M-I-L about 20 years ago using plain-old bricks, with sand underneath. No tamping, no stamping. The foot traffic after its built does that. Still looks good.

You can rent one of those paver stamping machines (not sure if this is the right term) from Home Depot to get it level. But that's probably only worth it if you're working with a large area.

easily done by hand. all it takes is a little effort.

Is the weed fabric to help contain the sand? About every landscaper I know detests weed fabric except for under stones and rock (to keep them in place). If you need weed control, you could use Preen.

Yeah I just want to keep weeds from growing through the cracks. Preen? What's this you speak of? Like just visqueen?

Basically, it is pre-emergent you can lay down on soil to prevent existing weeds. Alot of landscapers put in down, cover with mulch, then add another layers to kill existing weeds in the soil. Since you are coving the soil with sand, stone, etc., I doubt any weed seed that blows in would germinate and cause you much trouble. The main thing is to just kill everything that has already taking root in your soil.

Okay Olevet..you wanted to see pics...so you got 'em right here.
I started this project yesterday, and I hope to finish it today, but I'm not sure if I will.
I threw in the last photo that includes my energy drink. :D

you can. that's a nice feature.

i admire you doing. my pops laid a bunch of flagstone in his old backyard for a pretty good sized patio area....and said he would be more than happy to pay someone else to do it next time. it came out real nice, but he said it is was a lot of work to do it right once you got going.

It does feel like it's gonna be a lot of work..and I'm only doing an 8' x 8' area! I'm glad I didn't plan for a bigger area than that. I hate digging and wasn't really thinking about how much shoveling this was gonna take.

if you need to fill gaps, use cement, not sand, unless you don't mine tracking it in when it rains

Too late I used sand. But I may end up going back and putting some cement in the cracks after a few rain showers.

So I finished the patio today. My body hurts from all the manual labor! :D
It turned out pretty good though. I dug too deep on accident, so I had to go back and buy more sand. And it slopes away from the house nicely..so hopefully the blocks don't settle too much.

Anyways, here's some more pics:

Anyways in regards to olevet's post...I may plant some flowers/plants around the edge of the patio to dress it up. That's gotta be easier than making another patio to place plants on. :D
