I'm taking the Mrs. for a weekend trip to Chi-town in early April (my parents had a few free tickets on ATA that they're letting us use) and need a kickass, romantic spot to take her to dinner in downtown.

Any advice (that means you JohnnyMack)?

So many good places to try.

I'm out on downtown Chicago man.

I can tell you that the Gibson's in Rosemont (out next to O'Hare airport) is the ****.

I'm actually going to Rosemont in April, I'm sure I'll have several meals at Gibson's.

I can't help at all with this one.

:O

Looks like they have a Gibson's in downtown too. I would imagine it's not the kind of place you're interested in though. The one out in Rosemont is usually a sausage party, loud, obnoxious place with amazing steaks.

I did see Pete Rose there once though.

Well, right now, we're settled on N9NE...but still open to suggestion

I'm paying attention to this one as the Mrs and I are headed there in late April for our anniversary.

If I were you, I'd go to one of Rick Bayless' restaurants:

my dad says the same things. Rick a strange guy, but his restaurants are pretty nifty if that's what you are into. high volume, fame type places. quality always good and inventive, to a degree.

he's legit. IMO. same with Lidia Bastianich in Kansas City. she's great and wouldn't put her name on a place that sucks. PBS over the Cooking Channel, anyday.

Rick's places aren't romantic though. Try it for lunch. It is authentic Mexican, not the Tex-Mex we are used to getting.
If Rick or Deanne are there, mention Oklahoma. Might get you free chips.

Rick isn't/wasn't strange, just not a jerk like his brother.
If you ever get a chance to take a cooking class from him - do it! It's worth it just for the way he teaches you what could/did go wrong. He used to teach classes in his mom's kitchen, the house on Grand. He'd hold a few classes and just charge enough to cover the airfare & ingredients. Fun times

I generally prefer to go to the bars whos names can only be inferred from the neon beer signs in the windows.

'Old Style', 'Coors Light', 'Bud', etc.

If you're doing steak, I would try Keefers. If you want Italian, I would do Spiaggia.

You should take her to Luby's and get her a LuAnn platter. I think you get a discount if you get there before 4. :D

Probably not too romantic, but nevertheless a MUST if you are in Chi Town:

Ask around. Pretty much all of the ones that don't say "Pizza Hut" or "Papa John's" do. You must get deep dish.

Tons of great pizza places, exactly.

And Roditys Greek restaurant is highly recommended. Though it's been awhile since I've been there.

Consider these and only these places for Chicago Style Pizza:

Giordano's
Lou Malnati's
Gino's East (touristy)
Pizzeria Uno
Bacino's

A trip (for me) to Chicago isn't complete without hitting up Reza's.

The chicken and beef kabobs are to die for.
