I'm thinking about getting one, so I can play my parents record collection. Is there anything specific I should look for in one? TIA

Linens and Things has a Crosley record player that will convert those old albums into CDs. Cost is $400 and they usually have a coupon for 20% off in the Sunday paper. I got one and it is preserving a rather substantial collection of classics. Dunno what I will do when the stylus wears out, but I am having fun for now.

Besides the snap crackle and pop of a turntable, I miss the full analog sound. I also miss the clean amplification of tubes without the transient clipping and white noise of solid state.

I sorta disagree with that. There are many ways out there to get your vinyl into mp3, if that's what he wants to do. No need to skimp on a good platter. I highly recommend direct drive and pitch control. You can get a decent one for under 200 bones, but don't skimp on the stylus. Go with shure or stanton and you really don't want to spend < $75 on it.
I'm not saying to go out and get some technics sl 1200s, but get a good quality turntable. There are plenty of analog to usb(digital) connectors out there and for cheap.

I already have most the songs in the collection on MP3 or CD. It's more that I want to get up and put side one of Led Zeppelin IV on when it's time to make out.

Yeah, I only use my connectors for making cds for friends. Chicks dig nice turntables. No one calls them record players anymore.

Just make sure you don't play Kashmir. YWIA.:D

Just make sure you keep spare change around to put on top of the needle when it starts to wear down.

Or buy a good one. A stylus cartridge that comes with a turntable is usually really crappy.

yeah, what sooneron said about buying a stylus. that's where it happens. but, also, you need to keep in mind that you need to buy something where that stylus will be available--. for instance, my mom has a killer Mitsubishi turntable, really top of the line for 1981, weighs a ton. but, you can't get the "cartridge" stylus anymore. and she has a nice vinyl collection of old R&B and such--Joe Tex and Ray Charles and Aretha, Sam and Dave.

so, now, she's appropriated my old Yamaha turntable*...which i'm glad to help her out....but it's mine.

Dual is a good turntable.

in the late 90's, before it closed, i was in Shadowplay and they were selling some turntables that apparently someone was doing locally (Norman/OKC). they looked like old style Duals--with a square, "wood" base. they were pretty reasonable and looked like decent quality. that might be something to look into...don't know how you'd do it.

*i tell ya. i bought a Yamaha amp/tuner, tape player, turntable and 2 JBL speakers at gramophone (the campus corner location) in 8th grade for 250$ (which was like a million bucks to me at the time). every piece still works and gives excellent sound. best money i ever spent. i don't use em anymore, but i still got them. and they work.
