View Full Version : What is it with people who don't like Pink Floyd?

BigRedJed

I mean, I wouldn't characterize myself as some sort of huge fan, but I really enjoy a good Floyd song when it comes on.

But it seems like there are only two types of people: those who love Pink Floyd and those who hate them. I really don't understand hating them.

Actually, there's three types of people:

1.those who love Pink Floyd.
2.those who hate Pink Floyd.
3.those who like Pink Floyd, but are tired of hearing them.

Well, I like post-Syd well enough (I love Syd era too, but it's like two different bands), but I agree about post-Waters. Pale imitation of its former self.

Pink Floyd is bad ****ing ***! They probably have one of the top three guitarist ever. Comfortably Numb is one of the greatest solos ever. Lets not forget, The Wall has one of the greatest messages ever in an album, period.

Now I know everybody is not the same and everybody has their own opinion and taste. But there is no opinion or taste here.

If you don't like Pink Floyd you suck at life.

BigRedJed

Yeah, I generally don't INTENTIONALLY listen to them these days, but when a Floyd song comes up in my shuffle every week or so, I'm always thinking "man, I need to break out Dark Side or Wish You Were Here."

All I'm saying is: they do not suck. At all. But a number of people I know act like they're the worst, most overrated act in rock history. I mean, it's not like they're Bruce Springsteen or anything.

Floyd is the most influential band of the 20th century. Dark side of the moon was on the to 40 albums sold list longer than any other album ever.

BTW, I'm going to Roger Water's concert in Dallas in May. For those that don't know, he founded the band and wrote and owns the rights to 80% of their music.

You know, this puts me in an awkward position. On the one hand, I like Pink Floyd. On the other hand, you're both musical cucumbers for not digging the Boss.

And I say that with love.

This will make you groan even more: a buddy of mine is wasting a primo Springsteen ticket at the AAC on me next month, just to prove to me how awesome "the Boss" is. I have no doubt that he'll put on a great show. I know they're legendary. But his music is, I'm sorry, underwhelming.

i'll be honest. i do not like pink floyd. never have. not growing up in the 70's, it always seemed like the only people who still liked them were squares who somehow dropped the pink floyd reference to prove how "down" they were.

but did anyone else catch it last year when syd died, and the katt played a whole bunch of pink floyd, which hardly included anything from the syd barrett days. gotta love radio. :D

You should only listen to Pink Floyd a full album at a time, preferably on a big speaker system and slightly under the influence (DSOTM SACD rocks). Hearing one PF single while you are driving to work is a bit lame.

Now, Rush is truly a love/hate band.......and I don't love them.

You better make your face up in
Your favorite disguise.
With your button down lips and your
Roller blind eyes.
With your empty smile
And your hungry heart.
Feel the bile rising from your guilty past.
With your nerves in tatters
When the cockleshell shatters
And the hammers batter
Down the door.
You'd better run.

Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run,
Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run, Run.
You better run all day
And run all night.
Keep your dirty feelings
Deep inside.
And if you're taking your girlfriend
Out tonight
You'd better park the car
Well out of sight.
Cause if they catch you in the back seat
Trying to pick her locks,
They're gonna send you back to mother
In a cardboard box.
You better run.

If you have time, listen to Animals. My personal favorite Floyd album.

These are the lyrics to "Dogs."

You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes, and when youre on the street
You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking.

And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye, and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
Youll get the chance to put the knife in.

You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know its going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older
And in the end youll pack, fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer.

And when you loose control, youll reap the harvest that youve sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And its too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down alone
Dragged down by the stone.

I gotta admit that Im a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if Im just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake of this creeping malaise
If I dont stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze?

Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyones expendable and no-one had a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
And you believe at heart, everyones a killer.

Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a seat in the stand
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.

The greatest thing Bruce Springsteen ever contributed to pop culture was loaning Silvio to The Sopranos.
