My Blonde Daughter called to recount a beautiful 18 y/o freshman named Lauren Burkfrom Atlanta GA was discovered lying in a road near campus dying of a gunshot wound Tuesday night. She was transported to the hospital, but didn't make it.

Here's the really wierd part. About the same time Burk expired, firefighters responded to a campus parking lot (near the Poultry Sciences Bldg) to extinguish a fully involved Honda Accord. That Honda belonged to the murdered girl.

The Governor of Alabama has personally put up a $10K reward for info leading to the arrest and conviction of the perp. IMHO, it was prolly a whacked-out ex-boyfriend. One of those "if I can't have you, no one can" dealios I bet.

Guv's office returned my call. They are establishing a trust account at a bank to take the donations. Details to follow. BTW, evidently, they've been swamped with requests.

Oh, and ex-BF has an ironclad alibi. That makes it scarier. Seems more likely a random act of violence.

It doesn't have to be someone that she was involved with, it could always be a "wanna-be boyfriend" whose advances were not reciprocated. That has happened before.

If he's convicted, I hope he goes away until he's very old, and I hope his roomie in the Alabama state pen likes 23 y/o white boys and has a very large, well, you know.

Suspect Arrested in Lauren Burk Case

The Auburn Police Division once again recognizes and wishes to thank each of the following agencies participating in the join task force: the Federal Bureau of Investigation; the Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, and Firearms; the US Marshal's Service; the Alabama Bureau of Investigation; the Alabama Department of Forensic Science; the Alabama State Fire Marshal's Office; the Lee County District Attorney's Office; the Lee County Sheriff's Office; the Lee County Coroner's Office; the Opelika Police Department; and the Auburn University Public Safety and Security Division.

In addition to the above-mentioned agencies, we would like to thank Chief Brian McGarr and the Phenix City, AL Police Department for their fine work and assistance.

Thank you also to the countless agencies across the nation, state, and City who have offered their assistance.

Today, we are pleased to announce that a suspect in the murder case of Lauren Burk, an 18 year old Auburn University freshman student, was taken into custody yesterday by the Phenix City Police Department. He is identified as Courtney Larrell Lockhart, age 23, of Smiths, AL. He is charged with capital murder during a kidnapping; capital murder during a robbery; and capital murder during an attempted rape.

Task force members had developed Lockhart as a suspect and were attempting to establish his identity when Phenix City Police took him into custody on an unrelated offense. A great deal of work remains in this tragic case. With that in mind, many of the details will continue to be closely safeguarded.

A final thank you today to Governor Bob Riley's Office for immediately posting a $10,000 reward in this case and to each of the businesses and private citizens [including OlVet] who added to the fund. A special thanks goes to the local community, Auburn University, and the Auburn Chamber of Commerce for their support throughout the investigation.

In closing, we again extend our heartfelt sympathy to all of the family and friends of Miss Burk who, along with the Auburn family, have suffered a great loss.

I'm even more p1ssed by this alleged animal than I was before. If he did do this horrible crime, how in the name of all that's holy does a combat tour make a person more prone to target a young woman, get in her car, drive her around while forcing her to disrobe, then shoot her when she tries to bail?

A novel defense perhaps...but I bet it don't fly in Alabama by gawd.

another thing: In my opinion, IF YOU FIND YOUSELF IN THIS SITUATION, DO NOT GET IN THE CAR. MAKE HIM SHOOT YOU ON THE SPOT. HE JUST MIGHT NOT. OTOH, IF YOU GET IN THE CAR...IT'S GONNA BE A HORROR SHOW!

Mother of Man Charged in Auburn Death Offers Apology

http://aycu29.webshots.com/image/47108/2006185480461875514_rs.jpg (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2006185480461875514)
Phenix City (AL) Police arrested Courtney Lockhart, 23, Friday, March 7, 2008 during a traffic stop. He is charged with the murder of Auburn University student Lauren Burk.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) -- The mother of the man charged with killing an Auburn University student said her son was an Iraq war veteran who was changed after his service, and offered an apology to the freshman's family.

Catherine Williams, the mother of suspect Courtney Lockhart, made the apology to Lauren Burk's family in an interview with Columbus, Ga., television station WTVM.

"I am sorry that Courtney did that. ... First let me say I'm sorry to the Burk family for Courtney taking, taking their child. ... My heart goes out to her family," Williams said in the tearful interview.

But she also said her son did not confess anything to her.

Lockhart, 23, was arrested Friday in Phenix City, Ala., and was charged with capital murder in Burk's abduction and shooting death. Police would not say what led them to charge him in her death. [the most current news reports state he confessed]

The 18-year-old from Marietta, Ga., was found shot on the side of an off-campus road Tuesday night and her car was found burning in a campus parking lot.

Williams told the television station that her son hasn't been the same after serving 16 months in Iraq. She says her son had been living with her in Smiths Station, Ala., since returning from the war.

The Burk family likely did not see the Saturday evening TV interview, family spokeswoman Kathy Singleton said.

"The family didn't watch any TV last night. I honestly don't know what their reaction is," Singleton said. "My heart breaks for anyone that's attached to the whole tragic situation. It's hard on everyone."

One number for Catherine Williams in Smiths Station was unlisted. No one immediately returned a message Sunday from The Associated Press at another listing for Cathy Williams in the same town.
