Armor Check Penalties were introduced in 3rd edition. In 3rd edition, 0 hp is disabled, -10 is dead.

If you go back far enough to where 0 hp is actually dead (pre-AD&D, iirc), armor check penalties don't exist.

And yeah, I know you don't care. I'm a geek, and it's compulsive.
