OKLAHOMA 4, OAKLAND 3

The 5th-ranked University of OklahomaŽ Hockey club opened the ACHA D1 National Championship Tournament with a hard-fought, well-earned 4-3 win over the defending D1 National Champion, Oakland University on Saturday morning in Rochester, New York.

There was no scoring the first period but there were plenty of scoring chances, especially for the Grizzlies. More than a few times, Oakland showed impressive offensive pressure in the Sooners' defensive zone, sustaining the play for what seemed like minutes at a time and even ringing the crossbar at one point, forcing the Sooners defense to come up big to prevent the Grizzlies from scoring. Despite the constant pressure, the Sooners officially outshot the Grizzlies 10-9 in the period. On the power play at the start of the second period, forward Adrian Borchgrevink (Kenai, AK) put his baseball talents on display when he used his stick to bat in a fluttering puck just twenty-seven seconds into the period to give OU an quick 1-0 lead. Oakland evened the score with a power play tally of their own midway through the period. Forward Justin King (DeWitt, MI) gave the Sooners a 2-1 lead at the 16:47 mark of the period, scoring off a turnover caused by the Sooners fore-check. In the third period, forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) put the Sooners up 3-1 when he tipped in a shot from the point while on the power play at the 7:31 mark. Oakland took advantage of a Sooners defensive miscue and tightened the game at 3-2 less than three minutes later. Forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) was the recipient of a sweet behind the net backhand pass from Borchgrevink and Brewer buried the puck into the Oakland net at 11:34 to put OU up 4-2. Oakland took advantage of a lack of discipline by the Sooners and scored on the power play with just over two minutes to go to get within one goal at 4-3. The Sooners withstood the offensive blitz that they knew was coming once Oakland got to within one to preserve the 4-3 first-round win and advance to the next round at Nationals.

Oklahoma goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) stopped 24 of 27 shots he faced while Oakland's Colin Chase stopped 36 of 40 shots. Oklahoma was 2 for 5 on the power play while Oakland was 2 for 6 with the man advantage.

Oklahoma's record improves their record to 29-5-2 record while Oakland falls to 22-11-2. Oklahoma's next game at the ACHA D1 National Championship Tournament in Rochester, New York is tomorrow at 11:30 A.M. when the No. 5 Sooners will square off against the No. 4 Delaware Blue Hens, 6-3 winners over Western Michigan in the tournament earlier today.
