A huge loss. Now we can just about count the number of conservative journalists on one hand.

Buckely did come from a generation that openly challenged the New Deal and interventionist foreign policy, started a a fantastic magazine that in its prime was the rag for conservative opinion and not the organ for movement conservatism that it has become. Bill also employed great editors such as Joe Sobran who helped me formulate and define my own brand of conservatism. But, I have never been able to get past this quote, "…we have to accept Big Government for the duration – for neither an offensive nor defensive war can be waged given our present government skills, except through the instrument of a totalitarian bureaucracy within our shores".

Reagan, Buckley and Milton Friedman. All great Americans, and champions of freedom.

Rest in Peace William F. Buckley.
My favorite occurred when he and Gore Vidal were on some TV show together around 1969. Vidal called him a neo-fascist and Buckley responded, "I refuse to engage in a vitrolic diatribe with your ilk."
Sent a lot of people scrambling for the Funk & Wagnalls.

Had a million great quotes. There probably won't be many like him among us again.

"One must bear in mind that the expansion of federal activity is a form of eating for politicians."
