The gf and I are going to portland for her sisters wedding in early April. We'll be there from a 4 days, including the weekend. Anyone know any cool things to do? we are planing on taking a trip to Seattle one day.

Powell's Books. Best bookstore in America, IMO. Columbia River Gorge Scenic Highway. Unbelievable. Lots of wineries. Cannon Beach, on the coast. Worth the drive. Jake's. Walk around in one of the best downtowns in America.

Portland is possibly my favorite city in the U.S. Far outshines Seattle, which is basically a Dallas with lots of rain and better scenery, IMO. Not that I don't like Seattle.

lotta good restaurants in Portland. and the socialist public transportation makes getting around easy and the urban center of the city itself vibrant.

take a look at the druggies downtown - they all hang out near the station...

Drive to Astoria and see the Goonies movie locations, go south along the coast and see Cannon Beach (more movie locations), eat at Jake's seafood place,

eh, the thread explains it better.

i really regret not seeing the Goonies stuff, i was just talking about this today. that and Mount St. Helens

the downtown area is awesome. be sure to hit the Rogue Brewpub.

i'll second Portland as the coolest place i've been. if i were to leave Oklahoma, that's where i'd go

Boarder

I wish we would have gone to Mt St Helens, too. It really was nice. Very different from Norman. I could live there, too. I've always wanted to grow dreads.

Great city! You really can't go wrong. Plenty to do.

Go see my brother play for the Trailblazers, if they're in town.

Get a Portland Beavers hat. They have a sweet new look.

Nah, I was thinking more along the lines of a 300-scroll post about how 1) Oregon has better fishing than everyone else 2) Oregon has better-looking women than everyone else 3) Oregon is actually where the internal combustion engine was invented 4) Oregon invented cold fusion, everyone else is too dumb to understand it 5) etc.

Ostensibly, two things:

Environmental protection (correct technique leads to less evaporation, fewer spills)
Job creation. Think about it. Every gas station statewide is required to employ at least one person at all times just for pumping gas. It creates THOUSANDS of jobs. And a much higher price per gallon. It's awfully New Deal, but like Froze says, entertaining nonetheless. What is even more entertaining than watching them pump is trying to pump yourself. Just pull up to the pump and act like you're going to self serve. They flip out like ninjas.

All political commentating aside. The Oregon Coast is awesome. The Goonies sites are worth a look, Dinner at Moe's is a treat, and Kite Flying on the Beach in Lincoln City is fun as well.

I love that area.

no, the liberalism of the northwest might be enough to cause him to have a stroke.

Yes, a drive west to Astoria and Cannon Beach would trump any trip to Seattle.

If you go stop by Hump's in Claskenie.

Everyone who thinks there are only a bunch of hippie liberals in the northwest is obviously unaware that there are also a huge number of borderline wackjob conservatives up there, too. There's something for everybody up there!

That's the site I used when planning the trip. We ate at some place on a pier in Astoria. It was kind of neat.

sun river resort is pretty nice at that time of the year. i was really disappointed that the people of bend have no tolerance for cracks on the name (no bend overpass, etc).

i'd skip the trip to seattle and just go to mt st helens as i believe the johnston ridge observatory is open at that time.
