Take a derivative

Do an integral

just do one of those two things. If you find you are having a hard time doing either of those, then your problem is probably more with algebra than with calculus.

But I'm a lot rusty. And at work. ;)

Find the relative extrema of the function if they exist.

F(x) = x + 1/x^2 + 3x + 3

AND GO!

Solve F'(x) = 0 for x.

That's pretty much all I remember.

yermom
2/25/2008, 04:26 PM
dude... wouldn't that be f(x) = 1/x^2 + 4x + 3 ?

maybe the first term is supposed to be x^3?

is that supposed to be x^-2? that seems kinda out of place...

is it like

x+1
------------- ?
x^2 + 3x + 3

stoops the eternal pimp

yeah thats it!

yermom
2/25/2008, 04:49 PM
how far have you gotten?

have you graphed it? http://www.walterzorn.com/grapher/grapher_e.htm f(x) = "(x+1)/(x^2 +3x + 3)"

if you look at the graph, there is a minimum at -2 and a maximum at 0, this is where f'(x)=0 f'(x) = "(-x^2-2x)/(x^2 + 3x + 3)^2"

Frozen Sooner
2/25/2008, 04:54 PM
yeah thats it!

OK, f(x)=(x+1)/(x^2+3x+3)
let u(x)=x+1, u'(x)=1
let v(x)=(x^2+3x+3), v'(x)=(2x+3)

f(x)=u(x)/v(x), by quotient rule f'(x)=(v(x)u'(x)-u(x)v'(x))/(v(x)^2)

After simplification, f'(x)=(x^2+2x)/(x^2+3x+3)^2

At f'(x)=0, x must equal either 0 or x^2=-2x x=-2

Ta da!

Frozen Sooner

Jeez, yermom, finding the derivative is the crux of the problem. I mean, if he just turned in his test and said "Yeah, this is what the derivative is and I punched everything into a graphing website here's what the minima and maxima were" I think he'd be getting an F. Obviously they were trying to get him to demonstrate knowledge of the quotient rule.

;)

Don't knock the quotient rule. It's gotten me action before.

Quotient rule == waste of brain space.

Just remember the product rule, and use a negative exponent.

By that token, the whole of math is a waste of brain space. Start with 0 and just derive the rest as needed.

Frozen Sooner
2/25/2008, 07:29 PM
Heh. Good point. I think the concept of 0 didn't come along until around 1100CE. Then again, notice not a lot of great abstract math was getting done until then...

edit: never mind, I guess that the Babylonians had the concept, they just didn't have a true symbol for it. The 1100CE figure came from when it got imported to the West.

For geometry, it's actually a pre-AP course: one in line to prepare for AP Calc.

In math you can earn college credit via AP Stat, AP Calc AB or BC.
