Find the only legal move White could make that allows Black to escape immediate checkmate.

I must be missing something. Pretty much anything that g6 does won't lead to an immediate checkmate.

White: g6-g5 rook takes pawn
Black: c5-e3 bishop takes pawn

white g6 to g5 checkmates black (see h7)

D'oh. You are correct. I am missing something.

g8-f8 moves the white king to check from g5. All other moves of g8 put the white king in check from b7.

No captures e.p. are available.

Castling is not available.

a8's only move is to capture b7, which puts black in mate.

None of the pawns can move.

Hell, got me.

Wait a second. Why are there two white bishops both on white spaces. That doesn't make sense. I'm still working on figuring out how to answer the puzzle.

Pawn promotion.

I can understand that but why did he choose a bishop instead of a queen?

Dunno. I guess it's possible.

ha! i got it.

g6-c6 (my opinion, a dumb move. but that wasn't the point of this puzzle.)
b7-h7 rook takes bishop.

I spent way too much time doing this instead of studying for my Dynamics class.
