who is in my law skool class has continued to work as a CPA part-time throughout skool. A couple weeks ago, she was accepted a client who happens to be a just divorced lady (hubby traded her in for a younger wife) who now has 22 million dollars burning a hole in her purse from the divorce settlement. This lady has never even written a check and my friend had to show her how.

Regarding the man who dumped her, I ask ya, is there anything walking around around on two legs worth losing $22M over? I think not.

I guess if you've got $200 mil and she's a major pain, it might be worth it to dump her.

Homey- I'll PEEM you my name and address so she can use it for check-writing practice. Make sure she knows her zeros and can spell "million."
TIA!

Watch out. You'll get a check for ZERO million dollars and 00 cents.
I'd rather she knew her nines.

I don't know that anyone is worth paying $22mil to get, but I can imagine a situation where it would be worth paying that kind of coin to get rid of one.

Edit: And by "get rid of", I mean d-i-v-o-r-c-e, not calling Luca Brasi.

Here's the kicker...she wants my friend to help her donate a ginormous chunk of it to charities for the benefit of "at risk" kids. Pretty admirable IMHO. She has no kids, she got the house which is paid for, and at 43, doesn't figure she needs more than a couple mil to keep her comfy the rest of her days.

Why would she need to learn to write a check?

The reason I know this story is fake is because you don't have any friends.

How befitting that the first person to show this lady how to write a check was a lawyer.

Given the fact that she has never written a check in her life, and won a $22 million divorce settlement, one can assume that she was a trophy wife in her day. She's 43, so I'd say there's a pretty good chance she's still pretty attractive.

It's certainly possible put everything on plastic and use cash at places that don't take plastic.

Ever seen Goodfellas? Those guys didn't write checks.

Frankly, I rarely write checks anymore. I Debit card usually because its safer. If your checks get ripped off, lost or "washed" it's on you to unfarkle things.

Credit/debit card fraud OTOH is the bank's to unfarkle, provided you give timely notice your card was lost or stolen.

i haven't written a check in a few years. the whole idea that my name and address is on some piece of paper with my routing and account number makes me a bit uneasy. it was really cool when your DL number would get written on it and that happened to be your SSN. might as well write my DOB and mother's maiden name on there while we're at it

A couple of weeks ago, when one of my business checks was sitting at a vendor's place of business, some nice people broke in and took it with all of their other loot. Within hours, people were cashing checks all over OKC and beyond with a fake business name, but my business address, plus the routing number and account number from my account. They cashed thousands of dollars in counterfeit checks.

Fortunately a banker at one of the first banks was suspicious of the check and contacted my bank, who then contacted me and suspended the account. I didn't lose a dime, but those banks who accepted the checks did. What I DID lose was a bunch of time related to switching the account information on everything, ordering new checks, paying vendors without new checks, etc. It was a PITA.

$22 million. And that's just the divorce settlement. People like that have people to write checks for them.
