So apparently while I'm chatting up Russian ballerinas, the heatsink decides to fall off the cpu of my computer. Shortly thereafter the power supply commenced to smell like burning.

So, if the power supply is toast I can't tell if the processor is melted without replacing the power supply first. Fail.

Unless you were doing some pretty heavy-duty stuff, your CPU is probably OK if the heatsink hadn't been off for TOO long.

I told you. Russian ballerinas are tiny.

Well, if you were looking at the REAL LIFE girls I can't imagine your CPU was doing any heavy-duty graphics rendering.

Heh. NAh, the computer was probably just idling.

the processor should have idled down, most sytems will shut down if it's too hot

It's been about a year since I've changed my power supply so it's due to take a dump.

Power supplies are usually cheap and easy.

what are you guys doing to your power supplies?

i've never had to replace one...

Neither have I. Then again, I always buy the biggest one I can. They're cheap, and I figure spending $50 extra on a big power supply so I don't melt down a $500 graphics card is a good investment.

I had to replace one that suddenly decided that power fluctuations were a good thing. I was only powering the MB, DVD drive and 3 hard drives. If memory serves it was at least a 400+ Watt unit. I swapped it out for something more powerful and so far so good.

If the CPU overheated it was drawing more current thru the whole mobo and everything is most likely fried.

Hose it off.
