To be frank, it's hard not to show off at everything we do.

It doesn't matter what our government does, someone is going to complain. I say thank you for trying to keep a huge chunk of falling metal and poisonous fuel from falling on my family.

Note to everybody: You can send up satellites, we can shoot them down.

I'm not complaining at all...we did this to show up the Chinese, who until this point were the only people to have ever shot down a satellite (and apparently we did)

However, I do wonder, being that I suspect this was done entirely to send a message, whether or not we would have admitted failure if we did fail to blast it out of the sky....I like to think we would, but sadly, I'm not entirely sure that this would be the case.

It absolutely was a message. I'm glad we sent it. I expect there will be enough info come out about this over the next 48 hours that there won't be much doubt about it. Of course then we'll hear again about how we didn't land on the moon and the WTC was an inside job. ;)

I hope so. After thinking about it a bit, I don't think we would lie if we had missed. There are too many amateur astronomers that could easily point out that the thing was still up and in it's same orbit that we'd come off looking even dumber than we would have had we missed.

BTW, as far as the message bit goes, I'm a bit convinced that this was the only reason we did it. Some people like to say it was to destroy whatever classified **** was on it...I highly doubt that stuff would survive re-entry.

One thing I do know though, I absolutely don't believe the 'preventing danger to people' schtick they've been giving us. 10+ million bucks (and thats just the missile, not including the re-programming, nor the cost to send the ship to the launch site) to prevent the .000000001% chance that one guy might be injured or killed? We've never cared that much about anyone.

Look, the danged thing was the size of a school bus. It had a hydrazine reservoir onboard that if breached, could poison hundreds, if not thousands. In short, it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" dealio. If we hadn't blown it up, and it hit a populated area, people would be asking, "hey, why didn't we shoot it first? More proof George Bush hates <insert description> people!"

Aww hell, let's just issue a blanket statement:
George Bush doesn't care about anyone!

That should take care of it til January 20, 2009.

The ability to shoot down satellites goes back to the 1984, when an F-15 Eagle, using an ASM-135 missle, shot down a retired communications satellite.

IIRC, the pilot went higher than 80,000 feet and received his space wings.

The Chinese blew up a satellite with a missile earlier, but the result was thousands of pieces of space junk that now must be tracked, to avoid potential danger to other craft or astronauts. But, thinking about their actions, it fits with the lead in toys, deadly pet food, and gawd awful air pollution (remember they are exempt from Kyoto) - it seems they really don't give a shat about the health or well-being of the rest of the world, or even their "peasant" population....

But, the U.S. still has the technology and knowledge to accomplish this feat!

That may be right, but I seem to remember that they gave maybe 1 days warning that they would do it.

Either way, it wasn't much.

More likely note to Iran and China, we can shoot down your re-entry nuke tip missiles.

Britain has complained about lack of consultation before the test and potential damage from the debris it left behind, The Associated Press reported.
This seems to indicate there was no notice.

I'm just frickin impressed that we can hit something traveling 17,000 mph. I don't guess I really understood just how fast these missiles are though. If you look at the video, the layers of clouds absolutely scream by in about 1 frame which gives a little context of just how fast the missile was moving.
