I guess I can't trust those lying Republican Congressmen talking heads for information. I'll just have to get my information from my beloved soonerfans.com peoful. Which is much more entertaining. :D

Don't know what to tell you. It took me all of about 20 seconds on Google to get the accurate information.

the most important issue to me is trade/globalization. I would hate for our great country to turn protectionist.

Here is what Obama wrote, before primary season:

We can try to slow globalization, but we can't stop it. The U.S. economy is now so integrated with the rest of the world, and digital commerce so widespread, that it's hard to even imagine, much less enforce, an effective regime of protectionism. A tariff on imported steel may give temporary relief to U.S. steel producers, but it will make every U.S. manufacturer that uses steel in its products less competitive on the world market. It's tough to "buy American" when a video game sold by a U.S. company has been developed by Japanese software engineers and packaged in Mexico. U.S. Border Patrol agents can't interdict the services of a call center in India, or stop an electrical engineer in Prague from sending his work via email to a company in Dubuque. When it comes to trade, there are few borders left.

This doesn't mean, however, that we should just throw up our hands and tell workers to fend for themselves. I would make this point to President Bush toward the end of the CAFTA debate, when I and a group of other senators were invited to the White House for discussions. I told the President that I believed in the benefits of trade, and that I had no doubt the White House could squeeze out the votes for this particular agreement. But I said that resistance to CAFTA had less to do with the specifics of the agreement and more to dod with the growing insecurities of the American worker. Unless we found strategies to allay those fears, and sent a a strong signal to American workers that the federal government was on their side, protectionist sentiment would only grow.

The President listened politely and said that he's be interested in hearing my ideas. In the meantime, he said, he hoped he could count on my vote.

He couldn't. I ended up voting against CAFTA, which passed the Senate by a vote of 55 to 45. My vote gave me no satisfaction, but I felt it was the only way to register a protest against what I considered to be the White House's inattention to the losers from free trade. Like Bob Rubin, I am optimistic about the long-term prospects for the U.S. economy and the ability of U.S. workers to compete in a free trade environment - but only if we distribute the costs and benefits of globalization more fairly across the population.

It's called deliberately shading the truth to fit an agenda. Cherry picking and posting only those bills made it seem that his entire resume is made up of nothing but bills like that, which is obviously NOT the truth. But you knew that. It's using PORTIONS of the truth to create an unspoken lie. It's similar to calling a candidate only by his (typically unused) middle name, because that sounds more threatening/evil than his first name.

And for the record, I'm not voting HRC OR Obama. At this point, it looks like I'll be holding my nose and voting McCain.

But deliberately (and obviously) shading the truth only indicates that someone doesn't feel strongly enough about their postition to let it stand only on the true and complete facts. It shows that they have to exaggerate, spin, twist, or shade the truth in order to advance their opinion. It's weak, and it's designed to prey on the weak-minded. It's insulting and disingenuous to the audience, and makes the assumption that the listeners are idiots, and that the speaker can pull the wool over the their eyes with poorly-constructed half-truths. Unfortunately, all too many listeners are idiots, and they eat it up. It's disgusting, and it's a large part of what's wrong with our overall political process.

Besides, when someone who represents that they are speaking for a movement that I to some extent identify myself with, it cheapens that movement, makes all adherents look bad by extension. It personally makes me really, really irritated.

Well, considering that search organizes by types of legislation, and the first 8 (your selections) are all resolutions, it's no coincidence that you get a bunch of fluff or items that are merely "statement" issues for a senator. Resolutions are an opportunity for a senator/congressman to bring up an issue important to them or their constituency, but not necessarily one that justifies true legislation.

You stopped at 8, the last of the resolutions, and failed to list a single bill (of which there are many), where the meatier issues are listed. Bills are an attempt at lawmaking, resolutions are an attempt at statement making. But you probably already knew that.

BigRedJed
2/23/2008, 05:48 PM
Therefore, how 'bout we grab the first 8 actual BILLS that he sponsored. Like me, you might agree or disagree with some of the issues, but at least they are not a bunch of fluff, which is how you caracterized his entire legislative record by your posts:

Oh gawd, I was just so overwhelmed with all of your posts, I must have been frozen in primordial fear!

As I wrote earlier when I provided the link, folks should take a look for themselves, do the search, even better, read the actual bills Berry submitted. It is in the bill, where the hand reaches for the money....

After reading the types of bills Berry submitted, if a person still believes Berry is their choice, well, more power to them. The primary issue is with Berry is there is NO indepth coverage of this guy, his past, his previous legislative record, or his previous statements of his beliefs. So far, it has been so - Hollywood.

Plus, there seems to be several folks here that did not go through the Carter years. It is kinda like parents or grandparent going through the Depression and trying to relate that experience to those that had not. Same with Carter/Berry - although, I believe Berry would be much worse for the country.

Just though I would throw out this story, as well:

Liberal anti-war group endorses Obama
February 1, 2008
FROM ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES — Barack Obama picked up the endorsement of a leading anti-war group Friday and said Democratic presidential rival Hillary Rodham Clinton still has not adequately explained her vote to go into Iraq. Obama told reporters in a news conference that, even though Clinton explains how she would like to end the war, her explanation for her vote leading into the war is disingenuous. He said his opposition against the war from the start will make him the stronger rival to Republican front-runner and war backer John McCain in the general election.
Obama’s long-standing opposition to the war helped him pick up the backing of MoveOn.org, a liberal network which counts 3.2 million members and decided to support him by a vote of 70 percent to 30 percent for Clinton. The group said Friday that it has 1.7 million members in the 22 states scheduled to vote in the race Tuesday, and it would immediately begin a campaign to get them behind Obama.

By your own argument, aren't you cherry picking here? I mean you didn't post the entire damn webpage that they came from.
No. He was citing those resolutions as indicative of Obama's overall legislative record. Therefore, his argument was made more powerful by careful omission. He took the first eight items on that list, and posted them. They were lightweight fluff because the search tool on Thomas lists resolutions (lightweight fluff) before it lists bills. Why did he happen to choose only the first eight? Why not ten? Why not twelve? Why not six? Because eight maximized the number of fluff pieces he could list to bolster his argument, without listing any of the meatier items, which would have been inconvenient to it.

Me, I was only trying to illustrate that there was more to his legislative record than what those eight resolutions by themselves would make you think. I was able to do that quite handily by listing the first eight bills. Anything else was overkill, but I went ahead and listed the NEXT eight too, just to further the point.

We were trying to make two very different points. If I listed the whole page, it would further bolster my contention; if he listed the whole page, it would weaken his. That's the point. Lies by omission are still lies.

But I suspect you don't really have a problem with the point I was making, Harry, you only have a problem with the fact that I was trying to make a point.

And Whet, as a matter of fact I did live through the Carter administration. I wasn't of voting age, but I was politically and culturally aware. I am a child of the Reagan era, and volunteered on his '84 campaign. Our politics are actually probably very similar. Our political ethics, however, appear to be very different.

I guess it could be, but it's more of one side's perception of the "other side". Nice try, thanks for playing. Mmkay!?

If you can't figure out what I am saying then you need to go back to booze.Sounds like you're saying you respect people who follow Obama, are among those who think W is stupid, and that people shouldn't back him on much of anything.

I think you were saying that it's ironic that the same people who think that people following Obama are sheep think that following Bush are patriotic.

Right?

Right?Looks like that, and also that there's an equivalence of some kind in following those two, which explains the irony, in Sooneron's opinion.

Yeah. I can see where you're at. Blindly following anyone is a risky proposition.

Homey made a couple of good points in another thread about the paucity of actual numbers behind Obama's positions. I'd be lying if I said that doesn't concern me a little. Then again, Democratic candidates that DID give detailed numerical breakdowns have gotten trounced of late.
