Just heard from friends back in W. TX.
Looking for a story to link.

I hope injuries are at a minimum. Lots of good people work there.

They're saying folks in Midland, 40 miles away, felt their buildings shake. Starting to show up on Fox News, not on CNN so far.

Linkage, "1 hurt" (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080218/ap_on_re_us/refinery_explosion;_ylt=Ao_dHl3jfYEz0AK_ZTxWFe9vzw cF)

"The refinery employs about 170 people and produces about 70,000 barrels a day."

Picture on teevee looks like the bomb went off. That's how I've described the landscape there too.

S'posedly only 1 person was injured. No deaths reported and early reports say that all are accounted for. Amazing really.

I live in Midland and I felt it at the office. We all thought someone dropped a big piece of equipment back in the shop. The news here is saying that there are 4 injuries and no deaths. They also said that 100% of the people that were in the facility are accounted for. Luckily today is Presidents day and they were working with a skeleton crew or this could have been really bad.

Here's a link to the local NBC affiliate.

Too late. Apparently the blast was so powerful it made the wholesale price go up retroactively for gas that's already at the stations. :texan:

One of the injured was a lady driving by the plant on I-20. When it exploded the concussion knocked the windows out of her car and her off the highway. I-20 is about 100 yards from the refinery.

The refinery has changed hands several times. Cosden, Texaco, Alon, etc. Right after 9/11 some folk were worried b/c it was owned by an Israeli company and they thought it might be a target. Too bad, this was a huge employer in a small town.

Big Spring is on the other side of I-20, it probably had some damage. The mayor just said the town was "rocked" but didn't mention any damage in the town.

Here are some pictures from a guy that works at the plant. The white car is the one the lady was in that got hurt while driving by.

I guess that mushroom-looking cloud must have been a result of the combination of tons of smoke and the wind speed/direction. 'Cause, while I wouldn't have wanted to be in that office when that thing went off, that's not near the devastating explosion that the cloud would have led you to believe.

If I remember correctly the office is a few hundred yards away from where the explosion took place. There was no wind at all when the plant went up so it made the mushroom cloud effect a little worse than it really was.

It will be interesting to see if the cause was the same as the explosion in Texas City. And if so, what will come of it.

99% of the time you are correct but there was no wind yesterday morning. This year has been unusually windy even for this part of the country but yesterday was surprisingly calm.
