Don't worry, I'm sure it happened in a "gun free zone"

Killed: 4 women, 1 male - and male shooter, who shot himself.

Yes, it was in a gun-free zone - (only Governor, Mayors, and Oprah are allowed to have armed bodyguards...)

Also, the gunman burst into an intro Geology course and started shooting.

Was this IN Chicago proper?

North Central Illinois, from what I saw on the map.....not too far from Chicago.

No, it was west of Chicago in the town of Dekalb, at Northern Illinois University. This is the school the Notre Dame QB (Demetrius Jones) first enrolled, before transfering to Cincinnati.

take a look at this map: Dekalb (http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=41.932532~-88.740577&style=r&lvl=9&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&encType=1)

Ok, thanks. Well, that really sucks.

Too bad he just didn't shoot himself.

Tonight, there are six families adjusting to the fact that their lives will never be the same.

What a shame.

Actually, this is something I really wonder about. Why do these insane people have to end the lives of people who are (assumingly) happy and would like to live their lives before the shooter ends his own? I mean, I understand that all life loss is bad, but if he's that into killing himself, why don't he just kill himself and not other people who have their lives ahead of them?

If nobody notices their life, perhaps a killing spree will cause people to notice their death.

A childhood friend of mine killed himself recently. I've very thankful he took the time to make provisions for his children rather than extending his tragedy to other families. I'm still bummed out by it.

The shooter was a former graduate student.

You know, on a personal level, I always apply the same "families never the same" filter to most every tragedy involving young people. College kids are always finding unusual ways to off themselves and each other. We all jump into the stories with predictable interest and sympathy.

These shootings are beyond normal. I cannot imagine the pain of the parents this evening. God bless them.

What gets me is this:

As a nation, we've always had colleges, kids, schools, and guns.

I guess those 2 punks in Colorado made it a "cool" way to go for the losers of the world.

The have been school shootings long before that. A guy tried to shoot up UNL in the early 90's but his assault rifle jammed. A guy blew up a school in Michigan in the 30's. Whitman in the 60's. As long as people still lose it and go on killing sprees schools will be tempting targets.
