Get ready for gas prices to soar, even though this is probably a tempest in a teapot.

Oil may spike up vis-a-vis speculation, but gas will remain flat.

Remember, oil is traded on the open market. Chavez can't prevent Exxon from getting it unless he doesn't sell it period.

I think there is plenty of demand outside of us; that's always the reason they give for high oil/gas prices.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened already.

Well thank God we haven't already wrecked the economy by pursuing alternative energy and making cars that get better mileage, or this could have really hurt....

Remember, oil is traded on the open market. Chavez can't prevent Exxon from getting it unless he doesn't sell it period.

One of my professors just discussed this in class (he was a petroleum chemist in a previous life), and his comment was that this won't last long -- apparently, almost all of the refining capacity in the world that is capable of processing typical Venezuelan oil is in the USA.

AT is correct.

Not only that, but since it's a commodity, if it remains in the market at all then price remains constant.

I'd love to EM take some of thier assets, like one of the largest and most important refineries in this country, which is owned by Chavez & Citgo.

There is a natural balance to everything I think. And there is no reason why there wouldn't be a natural balance to this as well.

The capitalists will always reign and socialists will always bitch.

Gas went up 2-6 cents a gallon today, depending on the station. Exxon jumped the most.

Yeah, but to us, that change is about $1.50 more to fill up your car. To Venezuela, that's ****ing up half of your export economy.

And it cracks me up that Chavez is ****ed because Exxon and Conoco didn't roll over when he tried to extort them, took his *** to court, and just got about $12 billion worth of Venezuelan assets frozen by courts in the US, UK, and the Netherlands. :D

His bark is bigger than his bite.

I never buy my gas from 7-11 anyway, so I'm not too concerned.

Heck, just wait till Obama gets in, he and Chavez will be best buds! After Obama and Fidel work things out, I figure the two of them can head down to SA to party with ole Hugo.... maybe Daniel Ortega will come down, as well, to really whoop it up!

VeeJay

I haven't bought gas at a Citgo in probably two years.

I'll drive out of my way to go someplace else

SoonerGirl06
2/13/2008, 11:03 PM
Yep. That's me too.

I have one just down the street from where I live. I'll drive an extra 2 miles to buy gasoline elsewhere. And because of all of this I may just start buying my gas at Exxon.

Hey, Mama. Glad to see you posting in my thread.

Don't you think Chavez is an ugly sumbitch?

GottaHavePride

Conoco was the other oil company that didn't roll over for Chavez. I'll stick with them.

Their sign is little ou's everywhere.

And I don't even know where the hell an Exxon IS around here.

Frozen Sooner
2/14/2008, 12:05 AM
Yeah, I don't think I'll be spending money at an Exxon station anytime soon no matter what.

Well, unless they finally pony up and pay for their actions.

This sounds like a job for Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/citgo.asp).

7-Eleven no longer buys Citgo gasoline.

SoonerGirl06

Interesting.

I've seen several of them that still have the Citgo logo.

:P I'm not saying that. :P

And no.. I didn't read the whole damn thing. I need the Cliff Notes version.

I wonder why some of the stores haven't removed the logo. And who are they using now?

The U.S. remains the No. 1 buyer of Venezuelan oil, and Chavez relies largely on U.S. oil money to stimulate his economy and bankroll social programs that have traditionally boosted his popularity.

Some analysts say it would make little sense for Chavez to follow through on his broader threats to cut off oil sales to the U.S. because Venezuela owns refineries in the United States that are customized to handle the South American country's heavy crude..
