So, I was on the phone earlier complaining that I had to drive over to the post office to drop my Netflix in the mail. The person with whom I was conversing said something like, "Don't you have a mailbox?" I replied that I did, and she asked why I didn't just put them in my mailbox.

Well, to make a long story short, I had no idea you could simply put outgoing letters in your OWN mailbox and that the mailman would then pick them up. Evidently, she said you raise the little flag on the side. I always thought the flag meant that you had RECEIVED mail.

Now, before I get called an idiot, this is the first place I've ever lived at that had a mailbox.

Sicem, you're too naive to be real most of the time.

Didn't ya even have little mailboxes at school in like 1st grade for your Valentines?
Or play "post office" with the little red haired girl down the street?

You're really not that dumb, are you?

Have you ever noticed your mail box having the flag up when you had mail? Remember putting it down? Anything that would indicate that this is the purpose of the flag?

I thought our mailman was just too lazy to raise the flag.

Yes, I am DEAD serious about this. I'll point out once again though that I have NEVER had a mailbox before. Back in Oklahoma we have a PO box, and then all of my apartments had a PO Box style set up.

This is the first time I've had a home mailbox.

What? There's not a light on the mailbox.

Postal regulation. Your mailbox flag needs to be illuminated so they can tell if you have outgoing mail or not.

It's not a big fine or anything, but you notice how most people's mailboxes have a light near them? That's why.

I went down the street, and not one single person has their mailbox illuminated. I think this may be an issue with Alaska since you have screwed up daylight hours at various times throughout the year.

It's never dark when the mailman comes just around 5:00.

In N.W. OKC, we have to have ours illuminated, and it's pretty bright at around 2 o'clock in the afternoon when the mailman comes.

Fair question. The answer is, I'm not.
Though I keep up with it more than most, I'm not a policy wonk.
I'll leave that up to the good folks at Heritage, AEI, Cato, etc.

I like the electoral rather than policy side of politics. My only concern with policy is the effect it has on the electoral success of a given candidate or party.

Simply put, I don't want to make the policy; I want to sell the policy.

They make specialty mailbox lights that meet all the legal requirements. Just go to Home Depot or Lowes or any place that sells mailboxes and ask for them. You're going to have to aim the light correctly when you install it, but it comes with instructions...maybe you should get your roommates to help.
