View Full Version : Eyeglasses Question

I need to replace my current pair, and while I have always just purchased them at my local eye doctor in the past, I will soon have to switch eye doctors. So as I am in the process of switching, I got to wondering where the best value in eyeglasses is to be found. Is a local shop, a chain, the innerweb, etc. Anybody have any useful insight?

I just buy them from the eye doctor. These cheap eyeglass places aren't really all that cheap once you add UV protection, scratch-resistance, etc...

I work for an eyewear company that sells to Wal-Mart, Costco, Sams as well as the little guys all over the country.

Wal-Mart has a pretty good selection at a good price.

There are some places that give a discount for two pair. We generally go that route so that 2 of us can get new glasses at a time and save a little.

I don't care if there are a thousand pair on the wall though, you will only find a few that you'll be happy with. If that many.

But then, the eye doctor will add in all of those extras, as well. Do you belong to Sam's Club or Costco? Get your script from your doc, then check out the wholesale clubs.

I have found that Sam's is the cheapest place to purchase my contact lenses.

2 pair designer frames with all the bells and whistles (tinting, scratch resistance and such) for around $230. If you want non-designer frames it's cheaper.

The last time I bought a pair of glasses someone talked me into going to a little fancy shop.

Yeah, that's not going to happen again. I get a lot of compliments on the glasses, but for something I wear once a month, totally not worth the price.

I wear my glasses frequently. It makes me look smart and good looking, instead of just good looking.

That will happen in about 2-3 years when I have my HSA fully funded. Until then, I need a up to date pair.

Chances are, they cost as much to make as the cheaper ones.

I said once a month. Not quarterly.

That's right. Four baths a year, whether I need them or not.

Try this, they have done a great job for my wife and son, Clark howard reviews them very highly.

Also check out the 20/20 where they took the same prescription to a Lens Crafters, Costco, Sams club and another eye specialty store. The only ones who got it right were Sams and Costco. They thought that was an anomoly so they tried again in another city. Interestingly same results.

In doing a GIS for "orange tang," I found this and felt compelled to point out this fish looks like a total whore:

I agree. Good deal and I've always had good luck there. Most recently was this past November...I went with the 2 pairs of cheaper frames, and I think I even got out of there under $130 to 140. And under an hour. And they're warrantied for a year at least.
As soon as I can afford it I'm doing Lasik. I've heard way too many great things about it from different people. And hey...Tiger Woods got it, so why shouldn't we? ;)

Yeah, I've thought about it...but can't convince myself to do it.

...but like you said: if Tiger got it why shouldn't us mortals? Maybe someday. :)

Heh. You beat me to that joke.

Man, I wear glasses every day. Pick a pair that you like, that is comfortable, and that looks good on you (make sure the sales chick is cute and take her advice). Don't look at the price tag, because there will be all of 2 different frames that meet all those criteria.

My ridiculously expensive Oliver Peoples frames say "No, look at the price tag, 'cause Mike didn't and ended up with a $700 pair of glasses."

This is posted solely as a precautionary tale. Possibly the dumbest purchase I've ever made.

Especially since they probably cost under $20 to make. Tops.

Under most HSA's you can go ahead with the surgery and get reimbursed, even if you don't have enough money in your account. Is your HSA through your employer?

I just got these in "cognac". I think they look pretty good with my auburn hair and pasty white skin. Picked them up yesterday.

Depends on how you mean through employer. They are paying for most of it, but I am arranging the plan through Thrivent.
