well, it seems to me that we tend not to want to spend a lot of money on research for the sake of discovery. Most space-oriented research i've heard about seems geared toward tapping resources elsewhere because we're running out of our own. IMO that's a very bad idea because we need to figure out how to manage our resources and energy more efficiently and responsibly here, rather than ruining another planet too. So I don't realistically see any major forays into space in our near future. It's too expensive (both in terms of money and resources) at this point. But then again, I'm not that knowledgeable about what's going on in the science community, so i'm just speculating.

#1 Are we alone ?

If you believe in God, that one is pretty easily answered.

And at the very least, as far as simple probabilities go, it's pretty unlikely that we're the only life that has existed or will ever exist. We may be the only life that we ever encounter though.

From another point of view -- how alone can you be with all these other people around? Plenty and not very, all at once.

#2 Where will the Next Big Discovery for the advancement Of Us peons come From, OUTER or Inner space

Probably from around here. Most likely on Earth or Mars.

Hopefully it'll be applicable to space travel though. It would be really nice to figure out a way to get from place to place in this Universe faster than at the speed of light.

Even if you believe in God, I think that's a pretty cop-out way to answer the question, though. sure, in a spiritual sense you aren't "alone", but that doesn't address the issue of whether humans as a species on this singular planet are alone in the universe.

Another ? will Time Ever Stop ?depends on how you look at time, i guess. If it's linear then I think by the nature of it, it can't stop. But in another way time is only our way of experiencing the universe, and that every thing that has or will happen already has and IS at the same time and we only see bits at once...so time doesn't really exist anyway.

Nope. Our watches and clocks are all very precise and such but maybe they are precisely measuring nothing at all.

I'm with you guys on the no wind and turdiness thing, but I don't really think I had a whole lot of control over it... ...it had to be organic, or it wouldn't have been believeable, and I would have popped out of my own reality, kind of like Neo, except I wouldn't have had a real body to go down the drain of pink body goo, and be rescued by Morpheus, but instead I would have become aware that I was just a consciousness floating around in really, really boring black space, so I'm glad that everything is somewhat believeable, even if it means you guys have to put up with wind, and headaches, and turdiness.

Oh, we're probably one of a kind. Or 50 billion of a kind or whatever. But probably not the only rock with intelligent organic beings. Carbon is pretty common as I understand it and there may be better ingredients than carbon out there.

I say "arrogant" because of the size of space we know about. It's pretty parochial to think that ours is the only planet spaced the right distance from it's star to support life that also happens to have the proper ingredients. Maybe I'm just hopeful, but it'd be disappointing in a way to me if I'm wrong and this really is all there is. Hard? Hell, man, you can will yourself (and others) to believe in pretty much anything. Lots of folk apparently believe that Texas is beautiful. Maybe they've never been anywhere else. Others believe that they'll get 49 virgins when they blow up a hummvee. Because someone told them so. Belief/faith/perception is mostly a matter of choice. I think.

People are eager to explain the unexplainable in terms they can settle on. And are even more eager to show others this light to join them in their understanding. Religious people don't have the market cornered in terms of security by any means. Lots of secure agnostics, atheists, apathetics, and probably just as many insecure believers and insecure nonbelievers. Religious folk learn a way of explaining things that make it often uncomfotable or indulgent to consider other explanations. So do believers in black holes. Try telling them black holes are fantasy. They'll spend all day trying to convince you otherwise. Because they aren't comfortable in ambiguity and it's our nature to find answers. Or at least to try.

I already told you that time is an illusion so really this question has the same problem as the first. It doesn't exist any more now than it will yesterday or did tomorrow.

I was going to bed and instead I'm probably going to the fridge. Again.

Time is not an illusion, it is the relative measure of one observable object against another, the way we perceive it.

In the alternative, time is what my kind wishes were passing more quickly whenever we have the lead against Texas.

Oh and Im Old And Im Bold .

I just came in from smoking a cigarette. Haven't seen so many stars since I was out in Idaho last time. Clear sky tonight or my eyes are open more or something.

I keep thinking that we are trying to prove/disprove opinions and I keep hoping that PG is right and we'll find a shred of enlightenment in the process.

A few posts have dealt with the 'ingredients' of life. Be it carbon, Europa, the perfect storm of heat/light/gravity or OV's single cell. Why is the idea of a single ingredient so attractive? Is it the possible simplicity and therefore understandability of it that's comforting?

...

Of course. I was being a smartass and using one of OV's tactics of proving myself by using one of my own points to support it and saying "because I told you so."

I'm just not convinced that our perception is as objective as we prefer to believe it is. Thus my points earlier about the possibility of other dimensions that we aren't able to perceive or observe. Well, except for BRJ who is clearly in another reality which includes all of us that are here for his amusement. Channeling the Goodfella's Joe Pesci now...

As far as I know. Those stars we are encountering might have some orbiters that ain't though. There's the other dimension! The "non-carbon physical" dimension. If so, then your next big thing is OUT THERE. A place where I've suspected you of being sometimes. ie "Olevet is really OUT THERE tonight."

We are certainly limited by what we can either experience or deduce. Both of those abilities are limited.

Actually I can't figure out what you're asking about the next big thing?
I keep thinking of "discoveries" like gravity, electricity, and the roundness of the world or inventions like the innerweb, steam engine, and bombs.

But you seem to be giong more spiritual with the "INNER" ideas.

What are you asking about with the "next" thing?
