Since I lent my neighbor $20 and he never repaid me, I guess that is what I lost!

I wouldn't say lent is stupid, but it is IMO unnecessary.

But then again some form of self-sacrifice can be beneficial. If it helps one person feel closer to God then good for them.

I could say I'm giving up smoking for lent, but that would be a lie. I'm giving up smoking for me.

For lent, I haven't decided....I may not give anything up.

I know, I am a bad catholic.

The tradition of giving something up is to remind us of Jesus' 40 days in the desert. If he can give up substantive nutrition/hydration/comfort for 40 days, surely we can pass on something for that long. ;)

And you don't have to give up something for Lent - you can pledge to do extra acts of charity or prayer during this time.

Everybody is different, and each person's decision is personal.

I keep doing food related things. The last 3 years have been red meat (2005), alcohol (2006) and sugar (2007). This year I'm using Ash Wednesday as a springboard into something a little different. I'm going to try and go 6 months without buying anything new other than food/toiletries.

No books, music, magazines, games, dvds, clothes, shoes, etc.

So you'll just point at that dirty magazine you like and say "Honey, you should buy that"

Genius.

I know exactly what the purpose of lent is . . . the problem I have with lent is that people treat it like its some special thing that if they can do this for 40 days it'll absolve them or make up for the other stuff they do the rest of the year.

Personally, I don't feel the need to set aside a special period of time to feel closer to God or think about the sacrifice Christ made for me (us). I try to do that a little bit out of each day.

Well, it's my belief that whatever you give up for lent must be a DIFFICULT loss...something you're not sure you can do.

So I'm officially giving up antagonizing people on here. 40 days. SHEESH!!!

I'm-a-gonna try real hard-like. :)

Thanks! I'm gonna freakin' need it.

Maybe my "fan club" will join in the spirit of things and we can all get along for 40 days? Wishful thinking?

Retreats for what?

Marriage enrichment retreats? We went to one several years ago.

Men's ministry type retreats? Nope, haven't been to one. Don't really feel the need to.

I'm sure I don't do all that I should every chance I get, but I try. I'm sure there are things I could do better to improve my relationship with Christ. Arbitrarily giving up something and thinking about Christ when I "want" it just isn't one of them. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Maybe I'll feel differently about it someday.
