There were two ways this thread could have gone: making fun of Stormchaser, or continuing the Hamhock hilarity.

Congratulations on taking the high road. :D

I've deer hunted up there on a few state draw hunts around Great Salt Plains Lake and there's some very remote country up there....I'm a believer.

My dad has seen them in an open range area between Bowlegs and New Lima.

I've seen a horse with a scar from an attack . . . and heard one "scream" one Thanksgiving day many years ago while out hunting.

...actually depicts a mountain lion taken near Seattle, Washington

WTF!! I did see a mountain lion when we were out camping this summer but it was not nearly as big as that one. We saw a couple bears too.

Well, there's this rilly kewt skwerl that chats with me very morning. He sits on the window ledge as I'm doing my traditional sunrise internet search for Japanese Girls Demonstrating Unusual Uses For Chopsticks. But if I ever spot a cougar here on Huebner Road, I'll report it immejitly.
Actually, I HAVE seen three big cats over my years as a hunter. Two were spotted as I glassed a pasture for deer. I declined to shoot either...too beautiful and I have no good Cougar recipes on file.
The third encounter was rather chilling.
One cold day, well south of San Antonio, I dropped a large barren doe with a neck shot, some 150 yds from my tower blind (BAR [Browning Semi-auto].270). After unloading the weapon and smoking half a Marlboro, I clambered down, reloaded the rifle, and made my way through the thick and thorny brush to the clearing wherein lay the dear departed.
I took knife in hand and knelt to do what must be done, placing the rifle beside me, barrel forward, safety on. I made the first incision...
A moment later I had a sense that I was not alone. I looked up to see a large Mountain Lion, not 30 feet away, eyeing me and my prize intently.
Now, I'm a combat veteran, only slightly cowardly, and generally not one to panic. However, I was mesmerized for what seemed an hour...for all of 30 seconds or so, and I felt a sudden urge to empty my bladder though that I did not do.
Slowly, I released the knife and took up the rifle. Slowly, ever so slowly, I shouldered it and peered into the eyepiece of the scope. Well, with a Leupold Variable, set on 8X, all I could see was a blurry eye and a whisker. Obviously, were I to engage at that range, it'd have to be an instinctual hip-shoot...while still kneeling.
(Isn't this thrilling?)
For some reason I suddenly yelled "This is MY $&^#! deer, go get your own! Now GIT!"...true in every detail. The cat, I swear, got this "Dude! Chill! I just wanted the liver" look on his handsome face and simply melted into the dense brush. I never really saw him leave. One instant he was there...then he wasn't. They can do that, y'know?
Anyway, after my heartrate dropped below "Drum Roll" I dragged the still-uneviscerated cervine on an arduous journey to where I'd parked the Jeep, loaded her in, and drove a good half-mile. I gutted the critter and was preparing to return to base as the sun settled but then I had an idea.
"That cat could have killed me. I would never have seen a surprise attack coming. Maybe I oughta...." So I did. I placed the heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs of the defunct deer in the Jeep and drove back to where I'd met the cat. Placing the goodies in a patch of grass, I said "Here ya' go, Kitty. See ya' next time." I knew he was not far away and would enjoy his dinner.
True, every word, and unembellished. It's one of life's vignettes that I'm grateful to have experienced.
Still won't shoot a big cat, even a Bobcat...or Fox.

Thanks for listening. In retelling the story I sorta relived it...nice!

Reminds me of a story I heard about Roy Rogers and Dale Evans:

It was Roy's birthday, and Dale gave Roy a pair of BEAUTIFUL ostritch-leather boots, which he put on as soon as he opened the box.

Later on, Roy's side-kick, Pat told him that the fence was down in the north 40 and so they went to make repairs before the stock got out. Roy returned to the house after Dale had gone to bed, and realized he had worn his brand-new boots out in the pasture and they were covered with mud. So he took them off and left them by the back door, planning to get up before Dale in the morning and clean them up.

The next morning Roy found his new boots in shreds on the ground and bobcat tracks all around. Boy, was he mad! So he goes and gets his rifle and takes off on Trigger to track that cat.

Meanwhile, Dale gets up, goes out and sees the mess and realizes what has happened and where Roy has gone. She summons Pat and they get in the Jeep to go look for Roy. As they come over the hill in the north 40, they see Roy taking aim at a huge bobcat that is standing on a fallen tree.

Dale gets excited. She has Pat stop the Jeep. She stands up in the Jeep and yanks off her apron. Waving it wildly in the air, she calls to Roy...... "Pardon me Roy, is that the cat that chewed your new shoes?"

Jesus, that's a big cat!

I saw a bunch of Mountain Lion tracks out in Angeles National Forest on Saturday morning, but there's no WAY the cat that left the tracks I saw is even close to that thing. (she had cubs with her, too) Thank God I didn't run into the actual animal. :)
